    Thanks

I want to thank every psychiatrist and psychologist I have spoken to and that has helped me on my personal journey. Your wisdom and guidance throughout the years has been paramount to the success I have had in managing my illness. I want to thank Frankie Shoemaker for working with me on the vision I had for the cover art. It’s so much better than I imagined. Also, I'd like to thank Rhonda and Kevin Bowers for answering some questions as research for the book. Your story and perspective are valuable for the world to know. Nancy Friesen, you have been so encouraging about this project, and I thank you for your excitement, support, and your editing/proofreading skills. Jason Watkins, you have been helpful in giving me feedback, and most importantly encouraging me to write this book in the first place. The times when I was lost in thought over how to go about a certain topic or whether something made sense or not…your patience with me during this process is immensely appreciated. Lastly I want to thank you, the reader, for taking your time and money to purchase and read this finished work. This book can't change lives without you.

From the bottom of my heart.

    Thank you!

If you are family or a loved one of the diagnosed, you want to know how you can help. Is there anything you can do? It's normal to feel helpless and confused at first. For the patient, you just want relief; to know you can live a good quality life. Will things ever be the same? How will people treat me if they find out? How can I sort through what I am feeling?

That is the sole reason I created this book. You're probably asking yourself what makes me qualified to write and give advice on this topic. Well, I have been, and always will be, on both sides of the field. Both the patient and the support team. My mother was diagnosed in her late 20s, and at the tender age of seven, I was also diagnosed. The product of all my knowledge, experience and research is this book. I'm 24 years old, but the disease has touched me over half my life. I will share some of my story now, but my full story is told in Chapter 10.

It was in December 2001 that I went into Cooks Children's Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas and was released two weeks later. Those two weeks were the most uncomfortable weeks I can recall, and for me, the holidays that year were a welcome distraction; a tiny slice of joy pie slipped into a whole batch of melancholy. There was a special school I had to
