About this ebook

Faith Morgan, former policewoman and vicar of Little Worthy, visits Oliver Markham's farm in the run up to Christmas, only to discover the house surrounded by police cars. A body has been found in the local River Itchen, which turns out to be that of Lucas Kemp, a local boy and chorister. Markham is charged with his murder. Through her connections with Winchester Cathedral Faith is drawn into the investigation, discovering that Lucas had dropped out of college and that his mother had died a few months previously. There is a question of drugs, and a rivalry over Lucas's distraught girlfriend - the choir is a hotbed of tensions. Lucas's unsavoury uncle, and a local drug dealer, both come under suspicion, and Ben, Faith's police inspector ex-boyfriend, has to rescue her when the drug dealer turns nasty. It's almost Christmas in Little Worthy, and Faith Morgan, the local vicar, has it busy just trying to keep the Christmas pageant together. In fact, that's what she's doing as she happens upon her former colleague Ben Shorter and his investigation team on the property of a parishioner. It seems a body has been found on his property under suspicious circumstances. Faith finds herself helping the police with the investigation, asking questions as she goes about her business and just being observant. Some persons who still don't know that she is the local vicar mistake her for a cop because she still has that "aura" about her person. This is a great follow-up to the previous installment in the series but would work well as a stand-alone for those who have not read the previous installment. The writing and characters are stronger than in the earlier installment as well. While this is technically a work of Christian fiction, Faith is not "preachy." Her caring acts for parishioners and for those who are in need speak for themselves. Although the setting of this story is around Christmas, it can be enjoyed any time of the year. This review is based on an e-galley provided by the publisher through NetGalley.

This is the second of the Faith Morgan Mystery books. I didn’t realize that at first, but as I read there were several times incidents briefly mentioned that I realized must be from the previous novel, The Reluctant Detective. However, it was not a big deal (even though I would prefer to read a series in order), and I was able to follow the story with no problem. In The Advent of Murder by Martha Ockley, Faith, who was formerly in law enforcement, is the vicar at a small church and is very busy during this Christmas season. It is her first Christmas at this church and she wants to do it right (or at least please some of her picky parishioners). However, murder is not is anyone’s plans! The story was a fun, easy read. I figured out the connections and solved the murder too soon for me! However, I still looked forward to picking up the book as I grabbed small moments here and there to finish!Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from Kregel Publications in exchange for a fair and honest review.

A cozy mystery set in an english village during the Christmas season. Vicar Faith Morgan is a former cop that must get involved when one of their choir members is murdered and the suspect is another member of her church. I loved the village and the church members in this parish, a perfect setting. Being a cozy mystery there isn't much left to the imagination but I did enjoy reading this book. The characters are like old friends... well, some of them are. It's a nice simple tale that anyone would enjoy. I received a copy of this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I have always loved British mysteries, especially those set in quaint villages with nosy characters on the look out for just whodunit! Martha Ockley’s second book in the Faith Morgan series fits the bill nicely. Reminiscent of a Jane Marple novel, The Advent of Murder adds a very modern element that brings this book a contemporary flavor to compliment the traditions of village life.Faith Morgan is the first year vicar at St. James’s parish in Little Worthy. It is her first Christmas season, and the festivities leading up to the joyous day leave her frazzled and stressed. The Mary for the nativity pageant is less than reliable, they are missing a donkey and Joseph has been taken into custody on suspicion of murder. But Faith is in on the investigation. She is more than a nosy parker; she is a former policewoman! There is a lot to like about The Advent of Murder. The mystery leads the reader into the puzzling search for the killer. Motives run from jealousy to drugs. The characters are very well-developed, and Ockley includes the traditional villagers, churchwardens and WI members along with urban youth, drug dealers, and alcoholics. I love the very contemporary feel against the backdrop of quaint village life. It makes the book seem very real. I also liked main character Faith Morgan very much. She is torn in so many ways — her new vocation and real heart for ministry, her past relationships and career, and the balance of work obligations and family commitments. This is a traditional mystery set amidst the struggle of contemporary life.So if you like your mysteries British, give The Advent of Murder a try.Recommended.(Thanks to Kregel for a review copy. The Advent of Murder by Martha Ockley did not grab my interest at the beginning but the more I read the more interesting the story became. Faith Morgan is the new Vicar of Little Worthy and she is very involved in getting everything ready for the Advent season. It seems that she has so many things to do that she seldom gets enough sleep. When Faith goes to visit one of her parishioners, she learns that a young man from the choir has been murdered. Faith was a policewoman before she became the Vicar, and she cannot help getting involved in the murder investigation in spite of all the other things that she must do before Christmas. Detective Inspector Ben Shorter is Faith’s ex-boyfriend and he resents her involvement in the investigation but once in a while he accepts her ideas.Characters and their dialogue were very well developed and the characters seemed to come to life on the pages of the book. The plot had many twists and turns and I was kept guessing until almost the end of the book as to the identify of the murderer. There were also several mysteries in the story which added greatly to my enjoyment. The story had quite a few rather unusual characters but they added interest to the story. After finishing the book I had the feeling that maybe Faith had been a better policewoman than she was a Vicar. I was a little surprised at the ending but it was a satisfactory ending.I would recommend this book if you like mysteries set in England and written by British authors.Kregel Publications provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Faith Morgan Mystery #2I got confused in part of the story because I had not read book 1 and I am not familiar with some of the English terms and church system. But those are more my faults than with the story. I did guess early on who the murder was and motive. Still enjoyed the book. Faith is a interesting character. She used to be a cop and now is a Vicar. She used to date Ben when she was on the force. Faith still can't leave the mind set of a cop and finds herself investigating the murder. People she talked to got the impression she was a cop still and were surprised to learn she was clergy.Ben detective in the murder case. Still asks and tells her things. I am not sure why they broke up. Don't know if Vicar can marry or not.A young man was murdered he was close too two other teens and was a member of a choir. He helped take care of his Uncle who is a drunk. His mom died this past year.It is the busy Christmas season. The first one that Faith is in charge of. She is on her way to a member's house when she sees a bunch of police. Oliver Markham is going to play Joseph. It is his farm that the teenager is found and looks bad for him that he did not call the body in.I really want to go and read the first Faith Morgan Mystery and learn more about Faith and her choices she has made.I was given this ebook to read and asked in return to give honest review of it by Netgalley.07/19/2013 PUB. Since I didn't receive this book for the Early Reviewers as expected, I found it recently at the library and picked it up. Having read the 1st book in this series, I was interested to see the development of the story line. Faith Morgan is a recently ordained Vicar for the parish at Little Worthy. She was asked to step in to lead this church after their pastor was murdered on Good Friday (book #1 "The Reluctant Detective"). She finds herself extremely busy during the Advent season and then is shocked to learn that a choir member has been murdered. Her experience as a police officer compels her to get involved in the investigation, run by her former boyfriend, Detective Ben Shorter. The tension between them created an interesting element to the story. Also interesting is her relationship with her various family members, living nearby. I enjoyed the small English town and the variety of fascinating characters, which seemed more developed in this second book. This is an enjoyable British cozy mystery.
