    Dear Reader,

Jordan had always been oblivious to Faye’s interest in him.

Faye’s life changing experience at the hand of Jordan’s best friend remained undisclosed, threatening to erupt and ruin her relationships.

Will Faye consider an affair with the man she kept in the dark about the close-to-the-heart decisions she had to make? And will the truth split them up?

This is a story that you will find as attention-grabbing to read, as I found to write. Your comments on this title will be highly appreciated.

    One

    ––––––––

Who are you staring at? Tyler asked with a nasty curl to his lips.

The intrusive question didn’t immediately sink into Faye’s thoughts as her eyes feasted on the broad shouldered, dark haired man attired in a charcoal black suit and sparkling white shirt walking almost too close with a showy brunette woman wrapped on one arm.

Faye’s fingers trembled as she recognized the startling pair of sea green eyes in the hastily filling foyer. It took great effort to peal her eyes away from the knowing gaze now engaged in witty conversation with the famous, stand-up comedian coming in through the entrance door on the west side. How on earth did she miss him on the red carpet outside? And what was he doing here?

Do you know him? Tyler probed again, tossing his head at the gorgeous man standing head and shoulders above everyone else. Faye was forced to break her doe-eyed gaze as they moved into the auditorium.

Hmmm...? She mumbled, distracted, as they were ushered to their seats. She was saved from responding as Tyler’s shoulder was clamped by his editor in chief.

Good luck, Tyler. No matter the outcome of this event, we’ll continue to hold you in high regard and, we’re all behind you.

Turning to face his colleague, Tyler smiled. Thank you, Terry. Champagne’s on me tonight. Tyler promised with the air of someone guaranteed to secure several awards at the soon-to-start event.

The expansive, twenty thousand seat O2 arena in North Greenwich, London shone with dazzling lights. It was all glamour and glitz as usual. The ladies looked gorgeous in their evening dresses as they made a show of getting seated. The early spring chilly wind outside was quickly forgotten. And men, oozing formality in their black and white garb, had their hands dangling across the lower, exposed backs of their female companions.

Ladies and gentlemen, we welcome you all to the annual, Excellent Media Awards, the Presenter’s voice boomed. Ted Cross, the suave and smooth-talking Presenter was rumoured to have just signed a three-year deal to present this star-studded event.

It was the gathering of the most important people in the media world. Everyone had to be here, be seen, be heard and be spoken to.

In the past, Faye had found this ceremony exhilarating. Getting a near front row seat for a good view of the unfolding drama was usually her top priority. Not this year. After several empty-handed trips, her zeal to attend waned.

Tyler loved the limelight even more. No, he craved it!

He had wanted a front row seat. But she had bluntly refused to sit beneath the microphone or in front of the blinding lights.

Ouch! That hurts, Tyler. Faye winced. He had just nudged her with his elbow to get the conversation back to where it was at the foyer.

At least, I’ve your attention now. We’re at this event for a purpose, Tyler stressed.

She found him annoying and irritating when his effort at getting noticed got thwarted. Faye continued to ignore his scoffs. Instead, she adjusted her seating posture to further stretch the expanse between them.

The first performance of the night was by the award winning, soul singing group, HAD. The guests were enthralled by the soul belching voices of the four-member group. Everyone that is, except Faye.

What on God’s earth was he doing here? She looked at her palms. Her hands were clammy and her knees shook with waves of numbing sensations zipping through her spinal column. Tyler, I'm sorry. My stomach feels queasy, Faye lied smoothly to get him off her back.

What? Tyler snapped, whipping his head sideways, his eyebrows arched in irritation. That’s quite sudden, he sneered unsympathetically as he turned his attention to the performers on stage.

After half an hour of ignoring each other, Tyler made an appeal through gritted teeth. Please, make an effort for my sake, just for tonight, Faye. I might be receiving an award and it will be nice to see that you’re excited to be here with me.

What an arrogant man, she thought.

Tyler, you think my presence at this year’s event is to grace your flank when you collect your award? Before you came into my life, I have been attending this event for Pete’s sake! Sweeping the swirl of her dress aside, she fired on, In case you’ve forgotten, I’m also a nominee. Step down from your arrogant height! she spat out, fuming.

    He made no comment.

Appearances were all Tyler cared about. Pretense was his cloak. She remained silent as her eyes searched for the tanned skinned, strong jawed, full eyebrow man seated many rows in front of her.

To her right were seated Genevieve Oscar, the news editor for the foremost gossip magazine, Blade, and her live-in partner of two years, Carson. Genevieve was a self-confessed blabbermouth.

At the moment, Faye was murmuring the appropriate, Yes, and No and Ohm, every now and again at Genevieve’s frivolous remarks.

Faye, I meant to tell you the other day, but it slipped my mind. Did you read the story about the aging billionaire who just found out he had two pregnant ex-mistresses?

Worthless gossip was all Genevieve cared about. Her nose could sniff gossip a thousand miles away. I heard about it, Gene, Faye muttered indifferently, hoping Gene would take the hint.

At once, Faye felt the tiny, sleepy hair on her neck rising as the tall, suavely dressed man stood up to make way for an award winner shuffling his way to the podium. He placed a pink, cashmere shawl on the shoulders of the petite woman seated beside him. The elfin brunette was preening herself like a courting rooster. Who could blame her? In Faye’s eyes, the woman in black dress was accompanying the best-looking man of the night.

It will be nice if you could pay me a tenth of the attention you’re dishing out to that total stranger on the front row. Tyler snarled.

Faye was shaken out of her reverie. Her attempt at subtlety had failed.

Rushing to her feet, Faye apologized. Tyler, I’m sorry. I need to use the bathroom. I don’t feel well. Her stomach felt like it was falling apart anyway.

A stinging storm had just kicked up in her near perfect life. So, sitting still for this ceremony she had wanted to avoid for months was proving challenging. Not waiting for his response, she got up on unsteady legs, grasped her purse and made a beeline to the nearest powder room. Her exit was hasty, drawing several curious glances she was oblivious to.

As Faye shut the door, her pulse rate soared, forcing her to clutch the hand wash for support. Resting her head on the 3D, plain wall mirror, she counted up to thirty-five to calm herself down. Taking in a large gulp of re-circulated air, she placed her black, sequined bag on the marble vanity top.

Jordan Marcus Beckham was here in London? How could he sit there looking so cool, while she was a quivering wreck?

Looking at her ashen face in the mirror, she recoiled in fear, holding her throat. Would she wake up from this weird delusion? To check if she was still conscious, she pinched her nose, flinching at the self-inflicted pain.

    Jordan’s here, she muttered.

His glowing, green eyes which looked everywhere else, but at her all those years ago, causing her sleepless nights, making her stomach muscles tighten and explode were back to haunt her afresh. And his friend, Dylan, her nemesis, where was he?

What about the humiliation she faced at the hands of those who set her up? And the harrowing pain and outcome? She’d always been "young Faye" to Jordan.

Last time she heard Jordan was resident in America. If so, what was he doing here at the London Media Awards? She couldn’t stay through this awards night. Tyler could hop off any high mountain for all she cared. This evening was supposed to be a sweetener after enduring a long and hectic work schedule.

With jerky fingers, Faye powdered her face, applying another layer of lip stick. Holding her head high, she made her way out of the powder room.

She bumped headlong into an unyielding wall of manly muscle along the dim corridor.

Faye gushed as her purse slipped out of her fingers. Oh! I’m sorry, I’m not usually this absent minded. The man she bumped into picked up her purse from the carpeted floor. Smiling with raw charm, he handed it over to her. And Faye’s legs turned into a wall of pale pink, marshmallows.

His bass voice was unmistakable. How many men had such deep, dark, booming quality to their vocals?

Have we met before? You look... Hey! That’s you...Faye? Faye Cole! Jordan’s face lit up like the fire cracker from last Christmas as his eyebrows arched full circle.

Faye’s violet eyes gaped at him. She stared at his well-built throat column exposed at the top of his pristine shirt collar. The groomed, dark stubble on his chin seemed to tease and taunt her. Heat spread to her face so fast, she swallowed.

Good to see you, he said throatily as his eyes devoured her now curvy shape hugged to perfection in the fabulous, heavy stretch, black jersey dress. You’ve turned into a dramatic beauty, Jordan added, his eyes smoldering in the muted corridor. He didn’t attempt to hide his admiration as his eyes roamed the dramatic cut out sides at her waistline decorated with a chunky, gold, diamonte studded chain.

Faye fanned her face with her purse. Words were scarce at times like this.

Are you hot? It’s rather warm in here. Jordan noted a trace of concern in his query. His eyes scanned the wall hosting all manner of artworks, while hers looked down at his gleaming shoes connecting with the carpeted floor. His polished, black shoes screamed designers! Why don’t you give me your phone number and I’ll give you a call sometime? he asked with his renowned, knee-buckling smile that sent too many strikes down her jelly backbone.

Squeezing out a mini smile, Faye was satisfied she had taken care to look great tonight. She didn’t attempt to make conversation because her throat muscles had collapsed.

Jordan was the only man she had met that made her feel short at five feet eleven inches. Her three inches heel didn’t make any difference. At six feet five plus, his wide set shoulders soon filled up the narrow space that was the corridor.

Numbly doing his bidding, she handed out her business card.

Speak to you soon, he promised in that sub-woofer speaker voice.

Annoyed with herself for being struck dumb at such an important time, she rubbed one palm along her thigh. His smile was sinful as he bared luminous white teeth that gleamed in the not so bright light.

As she turned away from Jordan to make her way back to her seat, she wheezed in surprise.

Tyler was standing right at the corridor exit.

Did he see her hand over her card to Jordan? Had he followed her to the Ladies, Faye wondered.

    The cheek of him!

Still, Tyler put out his elbow allowing her to link her hand through his as if they were the perfect couple.

Jordan stood back to allow them pass through.

I hope you’re feeling better? Tyler asked her coldly. His demeanor showed he wasn’t fooled.

Only slightly. If you don’t mind, I’ll like to go home now, Tyler, she murmured, abandoning any effort to appear hale and hearty.

Oh no, you won’t! How can you walk out on me now? Faye, please, I’ll be grateful if you stay until I make my acceptance speech.

Tyler, you’re a nominee! How can you be so certain you’ll win? she whispered, as they walked along the red-carpet aisle back to their seats.

Be here for me, just in case, he pleaded desperately.

Unsheathing her impatience at his oversized ego, she looked him straight in the eye. You make it sound as if the criterion for being a winner is having a well-dressed woman by your side.

Tyler cast her a disdainful look, which she disregarded as they sat down.

Ladies and gentlemen...and the Best Blog Award for the year...Miss Faye Sharon Cole in recognition of her...

Faye covered her mouth with both palms. The deafening applause drowned out her involuntary, piercing scream. Dazed, she looked up as more than a dozen cameras focused on her.

    Surely, she must be dreaming?

For the past three years, her blog had been nominated in this category. Disappointing as it had been, she had accepted it as a routine nomination. She never hoped to clinch the award tonight. It was all about getting nominated, she’d consoled herself each year.

With all eyes fixed on her, especially those green eyes that stuck all over her tense body, she got up on unhinged legs. Over two dozen paparazzi lights burst in front of her, almost blurring her vision. She tripped over Tyler’s stiff legs.

At once, the several pairs of eyes in the room faded away, her heart recognized only one precious pair that turned ninety degrees, clapping and rooting for her.

Without a prepared speech, she spoke in crisp tones, succinct words of appreciation, collected her plaque, trod back on her pair of unstable legs and sat down with a thud!

Mind-boggling! Faye mumbled as Gene and Carson clasped her hands.

The Media Industry had finally recognized her work. It felt good to be acknowledged in her profession after all. An acute sense of fulfillment washed over her. All these years, she had been convinced she did not need an award to make her happy. She was wrong. The plaque in her hands felt like solid, priceless, refined gold.

Next to her, a tense, Tyler Page sat and watched the sports writer from the rival popular media house secure the award in the Best Sports Writer category.

Tyler huffed and puffed, shocked and livid.

To put the spear into his bloated self-esteem, the second award for Special Article he had his eyes on, had just been picked up by the young sports writer from the little known, Sage Newspaper. And so, Faye had to sit through what was the most torturous night of her life, instead of the most celebrated.

After another sterling performance by XV, the best British solo artiste, Jordan Marcus Beckham received two awards for his valuable contributions to the Interactive Media Industry—another huge blow to the fuming man beside her.

Her ears were primed to every word of Jordan’s citation. Apparently, over the last several years, Jordan had funded the Institute for Journalism
