    CHAPTER ONE

The sound of a plane flying too low prompt me to stop climbing and have a look. A Cessna was making erratic moves and descending too fast. The landing wheels were not out. The tail clipped the top of a few trees before crashing into one of Ojai’s rugged rocks. I didn’t have my cell phone to dial for help. Descending took me ten minutes. The sight of thick smoke was about four miles’ away. Leaving my gear behind I grabbed my red bicycle and rode there hoping to find survivors.

Metal, glass, and other debris were dispersed around the wreckage. The smell of fuel was so strong I could taste it. A man wearing a ripped white collar shirt was standing on top of one of the plane's door. Smoke didn’t seem to bother him.

Is anyone else inside the plane Sr.? I asked from the bicycle. The stranger turned around and sprinted toward me so fast rubble flew behind his footsteps.

I am a blood donor and felt like two needles were draining my blood. The last thing I saw was the face of a teenaged girl. When I woke up ghost-like colorless silhouettes of women, men and children were everywhere.

They looked as if an invisible force wouldn’t let them move or talk. It wasn’t until I tried to walk that realized I was a silhouette too.

An overwhelming panic attack made me scream without a sound, cry without tears.

The sight of three guys gave me hope until one of them stopped in front of a little girl holding a doll, he opened his mouth and swallowed her.

The second guy was still choosing. I didn’t see the third until he was standing in front of me. I warned him with the first words that came to my mind.

If you swallow me… I will rip your intestines! His left brow raised and I knew he heard me.

You can talk? I never heard any of you do that before, he shared with amusement irritating me even more.

It was the first time I met someone with emerald green eyes.

I just wish they were not studying my face; his chocolate brown hair is short on the back and longer at the front, tight t-shirt, and jeans. Definitely a metrosexual.

I have never seen anyone swallow a soul before! Please help me get out of here! I pleaded with desperation.

Are you a runner? He asked.

    What?

    Your outfit.

Oh... No, I am a rock climber. Can you see my lips move when I am talking?

"No, but, I can hear you.

He tilted his head, pulled a hair, and placed it on his right hand. He made a fist and when he relaxed his hand the hair looked ghost-like.

    I am Arlan. He said.

This time I was the one studying him and wondering how someone like him could be Lucifer’s son.

Why did he pull a hair? I forced myself to regain control.

    Call me Lizzy.

I am going to place the hair in your hand, Lizzy. Close your eyes and see yourself back into your body, okay?

    Okay...Arlan.

    I felt
