Essential Knitting Stitches and Techniques. Learn How to Knit and Create Your First Project - Cynthia Welsh

    Yarn 101

I must confess I love yarn. The colors, the textures, and the excitement of choosing yarn for a new project are all things I like about knitting. In this chapter we’ll learn about the different fibers used to manufacture yarn and how to read a yarn label so you can choose the best yarn for your particular projects.

    Yarn Fibers

Yarn is manufactured from three main types of fibers; animal, plant, and synthetic.

    Animal Fibers and Blocking

Animal fibers include wool, alpaca, cashmere, silk, and mohair. Animal fibers will felt and usually need to be blocked after you finish the knit project. Blocking relaxes the yarn and brings out the beauty of the stitches.

There are three ways to block. The most common method used is to wet the project and roll it up into a large fluffy towel to remove the excess moisture. Do not ring the towel because this will damage the yarn. Lay the project out onto blocking mats and gently shape it. Start to pin the project beginning at the edges and gently pull the fabric into shape. Once you have it all pinned let it dry completely before you remove the pins.

Another method uses steam. You have to be very careful with this method since it is easy to singe animal or plant fibers, or melt synthetic fibers. Pin the project onto blocking squares and then use a steam iron to gently steam the fabric. Hold the iron a few inches above the knit fabric, do not let the iron touch the fabric, and lightly steam. You may have to repin the fabric after you steam it. Let the knit fabric dry completely before you remove the pins.

    The next method is
