    Yarn and Equipment

    Yarn Basics

    Yarn comes in three types of fibers; plant, animal, and synthetic. Examples of plant fibers include cotton, bamboo, and hemp. Animal fibers used to create yarn include wool, alpaca, cashmere, and angora. Synthetic fibers include acrylic, polyester, and microfibers. Yarn fibers arrive at the factor in bales and may or may not be already dyed. The fibers go through a process of combing, steaming, and finally are wound up into the yarn skeins and balls you see on store shelves.

    Yarn Weight and the Yarn Label

    Yarn comes in many different weights, and each weight is suitable for different types of projects. The thinnest yarn is called fingerling and has a weight class of 0. The thickest yarn is super-bulky and has a weight class of6. Ranging from 0-6 yarn goes from very thin to very thick with the most common weight used being medium (4). For example Red Heart Super Saver acrylic yarn has a weight of 4 and is suitable for most projects. Baby yarn is thinner and usually weight 1 or 2. Lion Brand Ice Cream Yarn is an example of a baby weight yarn and has a weight of 2. Bulky yarns work up very quickly and are a good choice for rugs and chunky sweaters.
