Summary
Introduction
About Insomnia
One sheep, two sheep, three sheep… did it ever happen to you that you lay in bed at night and cannot fall asleep no matter what you do? Perhaps you tried the old trick of counting sheep, and you already counted 100 sheep, and you are still awake? Do you often feel drained during the day, with no energy, and yet, you find it difficult to fall asleep at night?
If you answered yes
to those questions, it means that you are at the point where I was some years ago. Many people deal with insomnia regularly. More precisely, every night. You simply feel tired of being tired. And that means it is time for you to tackle this issue. Life is beautiful, and you should enjoy it to the fullest, feeling rested, refreshed, and full of energy every day.
And do you remember how easy it was to fall asleep when you were a child? In a matter of minutes, you were asleep, no tossing and turning, you did not have to make any effort to fall asleep; it just came naturally. How would it be if your sleep could be again like that of a child?
You will be shown several ways and techniques in this book that will help you get your much-needed sleep.
I must add that a few years ago, I was struggling with the same issue, insomnia. Almost every night, I had to go through the same ordeal: it would take me hours to fall asleep, then, after only a few hours, I would wake up just like that, not being able to fall back to sleep. My mind was going over every small detail on my to-do list or different project deadlines. Sleep would not come quickly to me and the nights seemed so long. How miserable I felt the following day: sleepy, exhausted, cranky, unable to concentrate, yawning all day long… I had tried countless sleeping pills brands, but with no result: sleep continued to be a BIG problem for me. After one completely sleepless night, I realized I could not go on like that. Something needed to change. This person was not me. Therefore, I needed to do a significant overhaul of myself: get rid of old habits, welcome, and adopt a new lifestyle.
Thanks to the extensive research that I started doing regarding insomnia and all the techniques I applied to myself, I now have no more problems falling and staying asleep. Insomnia is no longer my enemy, and falling asleep became something natural, as it should be. Pretty impressive, isn't it? You can do this too, and I will explain how you can get better rest at night. Tonight, and every night.
Why Do We Sleep?
We spend quite a big part of our lives sleeping. Some of us sleep more, some sleep less. Some sleep well, some not so much. But we all need to sleep so that our bodies will be able to function correctly.
If you regularly skip on good night's sleep, in the long run, you are headed for a physical and mental breakdown because not getting enough and quality sleep impacts every part of your life.
The accumulated lack of sleep or insufficient sleep influences all body organs, causing cardiovascular issues, metabolic and mental dysfunctions. Luckily, this does not happen overnight, but those who do not take care of their sleep for various reasons can develop different health problems over time.
The first purpose of sleep is restoration. Through sleep takes place the repairing and renewing of tissues and nerve cells, the neutralization of neurotoxins, and the restoration of normal levels of substances in our bodies.
Sleep has a huge role in brain cleansing every night. During sleep, our brain is restored, and we wake up with a clear mind.
The second goal of sleep is to consolidate memory. Sleep is crucial for memory consolidation, the process that keeps and makes longer-term memories stronger. Insufficient or interrupted sleep can restrict your ability to form both actual memories (facts and numbers) and emotional memories.
The lack of sleep brings along fatigue and irritability during the day and weakens the ability to concentrate. For some people, insomnia is just a temporary discomfort, but chronic lack of sleep can seriously affect health because enough rest is vital to good physical and mental well-being.
Consequences of not getting enough sleep:
Memory issues
A weakened immune system
Increased depression
Risk of obesity and heart problems
Are You Getting Enough Sleep?
Over time, several researchers attempted to offer an answer to this question. But despite all the studies done on sleep, experts say there is no recipe
that can be applied to everyone. Our bodies need every night a certain number of hours of sleep to rest and achieve the various metabolic and regenerative functions.
If you feel drowsy during the day, even when doing something that you like, you have not had enough sleep. If you have been deprived of enough sleep for several days, the body will feel that and express its need to make up for the lost sleep. It surely happened to you that after a few nights in a row when you did not sleep too much, you felt so tired that you slept tight all night long.
Even if theoretically, we can adapt to a schedule that involves less sleep, body functions (cognitive functions, memory, reaction time) will be affected to some extent. And severe sleep loss can lead to all sorts of accidents, including road or work accidents.
We have all heard about the mandatory 8 hours of sleep to feel rested the next day. But is it true?
People have different sleep needs, which are regulated by their genetic information. Some function at their best if they get
