Keeping a journal is a personal experience, and yet many people are reluctant to start or quick to give up the practice for various reasons.
This book is a personal reflection on the history of the author's experience of more than thirty years of journaling. But it is also an exploration of some new techniques that young or aspiring journal writers may be unfamiliar with. Exploring the various techniques will give new insight on how methods, other than writing, can assist in a journey of personal reflection and growth.
The contents is broken down into six sections:
1. Background and history of journaling;
2. Creative journaling;
3. Journal writing and mindfulness in the NOW focused journal;
4. Reflecting on the past, and the future in the FUTURE/PAST journal;
5. Other kinds of journals not reflective in themselves, but which can be used in combination with the reflective styles; and
6. Practical guidelines on using both handwritten and electronic journals.

The various techniques are explained, and exercises are given at the end of each section for the reader's own reflection and experience.
Links and references are provided for further reading.

About the Author

Journal writing is a supreme way to record your own life's journey.

~ Stephanie Dowrick, author of Creative Journal Writing

Section 1: The Beginning

1.1 Introduction

When was the last time you sat and thought about your life? Your dreams? Your hopes, goals, and even the inevitable difficulties? Perhaps you find your thoughts going round and around, and you feel that you're not getting anywhere near to where you can be.

Many people start keeping a journal in high school, but often let it lapse as they grow older. Perhaps you have been thinking of keeping a journal but have no idea where to start. There are many books about journal writing, and I made a list of some of them that I found to be helpful on my journey. But I encourage you to read wider than my list, because I found that there is still so much more to learn.

Since journal writing is a journey, a process, and not a destination, you will not find any goal at the end of this book. There is no goal or end. There is only the path of becoming, of growing and learning about yourself; who you are, and who you want to be.

My life's journey is not the same as yours, and as a result there is no one journal style that suits everybody. What makes this book different from all the other books about journal writing, is that by working through it, you will be experimenting with many techniques and styles.

I often find that by changing from one style to another, helps to keep my journal writing fresh. It challenges me to explore different aspects of myself. Aspects that I may not have known about, or were too scared to explore until I could do so in my journal.

This book can be a companion on your journey; a journey that will reveal the best of you.

I hope you find the process as satisfying and rewarding as I and many others do.

Side note: This book does not address the art journal as used by artists with paints and other art mediums. The artistic entries explored here are within the skills range of any person capable of using a pen or pencil.

1.2 History of journal writing

Like most things, journals and the reasons they were kept, have evolved over time. According to Wikipedia [1], the word diary comes from the Latin word diarium, meaning daily allowance and journal originated from the same root diurnus, meaning of the day.

For the sake of this book, journal and diary will mean the same thing. I prefer to use the word journal as most adults refer to their appointment books as diaries and their electronic diaries as calendars. A diary also implies a daily entry, whereas a journal does not necessarily require a
