About this ebook

2020 Arthur Ellis Award, Best YA Crime Book "Breathtakingly chilling...eerie and wholly immersive...A tightly plotted mystery." Kirkus Reviews starred review  It's been a year since the Catalog Killer terrorized the sleepy seaside town of Camera Cove, killing four people before disappearing without a trace. Like everyone else in town, eighteen-year-old Mac Bell is trying to put that horrible summer behind him—easier said than done since Mac's best friend Connor was the murderer's final victim. But when he finds a cryptic message from Connor, he's drawn back into the search for the killer—who might not have been a random drifter after all. Now nobody—friends, neighbors, or even the sexy stranger with his own connection to the case—is beyond suspicion. Sensing that someone is following his every move, Mac struggles to come to terms with his true feelings towards Connor while scrambling to uncover the truth.

When I ordered this book from my library, I didn't realize that it was a YA novel, but after reading some of the reviews, I decided to read it anyway. The story centres around 18 year old Mac Bell and his three friends, Ben, Dora and Carrie. A year ago the other member of their group, Connor was found dead in the caves near the ocean beside Camera Cove. It was thought that he was the final victim of the Catalogue Killer who was terrorizing Camera Cove with murders and his calling card - an old catalogue page showing groups of people and the one that was similar to his victim was XX'd out. After Connor's death, there were no more murders, so the police believed it was a drifter and he left the area, mission accomplished. Mac finds an old note to him from Connor and thinks that there is more to the story than what the police think, so he starts to run his own investigation. What he uncovers is more shocking than anyone in town dreamt, and he puts himself in danger to get to the truth. With the help of his new boyfriend Quill, Mac finally finds out the real story behind his friend's murder. The story had lots of twists and turns and many surprises. That's what kept me reading it. The big twist at the end was unexpected for me. I thought I had figured it out, but it wasn't the whole story.

I like that the main character is gay but that's just one detail about him not his whole story. I wasn't super into some of the other characters. They weren't that interesting or relatable, but I was so into the mystery of trying to figure out the murders. I did not see that coming. The very ending after it was all over didn't seem believable, the way they all handled it. But again, I super enjoyed the actual murder mystery.
