About this ebook

Five Days Without iPads is a fictional book based loosely on my time as a substitute teacher in elementary schools.

I have been taken aback by the use of iPads/tablets in the classrooms. I have been very impressed by how adept the students are at using them. There are times though, that I think they are over used and students waste time searching through topics that don’t enhance learning. I truly hope that students and educators can find a balance in the schools and also experience life and learning outside of the cyber world many are addicted to.

Today is a great day to have a great day!

To all the students I have met in my first year of substitute teaching: You have all brightened my days and expanded my horizons. Also, kudos to the paras and teachers I have substituted for and with. The work you people do on a daily basis is amazing, and you can never be paid enough for the vital role you play in the lives of children.

Finally, to my granddaughter Brexley Kay Turnbull, born July 27, 2017. Know that you occupy a very special place in your Grandpa Mike’s heart and always will. Your Grammy and I look forward to sharing in all the great things that will come your way!

As soon as I saw you I knew a grand adventure was about to happen.

It was 8:30 Thursday morning, and Mrs. Raha called her class to the front of the room for the morning circle. Like most days, she reviewed the daily schedule, took lunch count, and the class did the morning greeting and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

After the pledge, Beckett raised his hand. Mrs. Raha asked, What do you have on your mind?

Beckett asked, Are we going to have sharing time today?

Mrs. Raha said, We will, because I also have an announcement. Mrs. Raha asked the class if anyone had anything to share. Beckett, Claire, Zander, and Brexley all raised their hands. Mrs. Raha called on Claire first. Claire opened her mouth wide for everyone to see and said, I lost a tooth yesterday.

Liam asked Claire, Did the tooth fairy come to your room last night?

She said, Yes, and he left a five-dollar bill under my pillow!

Mrs. Raha thought to herself, That seems to be a lot. She called on Zander next.

He excitedly announced, Today is my birthday and I brought cupcakes for everyone to have during snack time!

Brexley was next to share. She said, My mom and dad surprised me with a real live puppy yesterday after school and they named her Mia. All the boys and girls in the class were excited for Brexley and they had all kinds of questions for her.

What kind, what color, boy or girl?

Beckett didn’t seem quite as excited as everyone else. Mrs. Raha asked, What is wrong, Beckett? Aren’t you happy for Brexley?

Beckett said, Yes, but I am getting a puppy this weekend too. We are picking her up on Saturday. Her name is Minne, because she was born in Minnesota.

When Beckett was done sharing, Mrs. Raha took her turn to tell the kids her big news. Mrs. Raha said, My husband surprised me with a special gift for our 20th wedding anniversary. He arranged for us to take a one-week trip to Hawaii. We are leaving this Saturday and will be back next Sunday.

The kids were very excited for Mrs. Raha. Wilson asked, Where is Hawaii at? Mrs. Raha pulled down the world map in front of the room and showed the class. She explained to them that Hawaii was a state in America, even though it was located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Lilly also knew that Alaska was another state not connected to the other 48 states.

Bronson had a really big grin on his face. Mrs. Raha said, I am glad you are so happy for me Bronson.

Bronson said, I am happy for you, but I am also glad we won’t have school next week because you will be in Hawaii.

Mrs. Raha laughed. Bronson, you will have school; there will be a substitute teacher here all week. I will talk about next week’s plans and my trip some more tomorrow. Friday will be my last day in class before we leave on our trip. Everyone can write down two questions each to ask me tomorrow.

That night at dinner, Brexley’s parents asked her, How was your day at school? Did you learn anything new?

Brexley said, I learned that Hawaii and Alaska are the two states not connected to the other forty-eight states and Hawaii is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Brexley’s parents were very impressed with her newfound knowledge.

Brexley’s mom asked, Why were you talking about Hawaii in class? Brexley told her mom and dad about Mrs. Raha’s trip to Hawaii next week. Brexley’s mom said, I am jealous; I would love to go back to Hawaii. Your dad and I went there for our honeymoon.

Her dad said, It would just be a great time to go there; it is so cold here this winter and Hawaii has great weather.

Before Beckett went to bed, he washed up, brushed his teeth, and put his pajamas on. His mom and dad came into his room to hear his prayers. Beckett prayed that Mrs. Raha and her husband have a good time
