    A Perfect Tour of Madagascar

    Day 1

    Antananarivo

Dedicate the morning to the Rova Antananarivo, museums and other old buildings that grace historic Haut-Ville. After a Malagasy-fusion lunch-with-a-view at Restaurant Lokanga, head to the lower town to explore its markets, shops and colonial landmarks.

    Day 2

    Ambohimanga and Ivato

It’s about an hour’s drive north to Rova Ambohimanga, the most compelling of Imerina’s 12 Sacred Hills, with its centuries-old palaces and royal tombs. Head back to suburban Ivato to enjoy a guided tour and pre-booked lunch at La Ferme d’Ivato, then visit the nearby Croc Farm, and stop at Marché Artisanal de la Digue, the island’s largest handicraft market.

    Days 3-4

    Parc National Andasibe-Mantadia

A half-day drive brings you to Madagascar’s best one-stop wildlife viewing destination. Take a guided evening walk to see nocturnal tree-frogs, chameleons and lemurs. The next morning, hike into the forested hills in search of the charismatic indri - the largest living lemur. Return to Antananarivo on the second afternoon.

    Days 5-6

    Baobabs and Tsingy

Fly to the low-key western seaport of Morondava to visit and photograph the iconic Allée des Baobabs, and look for the rare fossa (the island’s largest carnivore) in the Réserve Forestière de Kirindy. Allow at least two days to visit the remote Parc National des Tsingy de Bemaraha.

    Days 7-9

    Diego Suarez

Fly to the scenic port town of Diego Suarez and base yourself in the lively town centre or at Joffreville on Montagne d’Ambre. A hike in the wildlife-rich forests of Parc National de la Montagne d’Ambre is a must-do. Other great goals for day trips include the historic Montagne des Français, the beach resort of Ramena and the gorgeous La Mer d’Emeraude.

    Days 10-11

    Réserve Spéciale d’Ankarana

Break the long drive from Diego Suarez to Nosy Be with a short side trip to the surreal Tsingy Rouges and a two-night stay at the Ankarana, the most accessible of Madagascar’s major tsingy formations.

    Days 12-13

    Nosy Be

A full-day’s drive takes you the lovely tropical island of Nosy Be. Spend the next day chilling out on an idyllic beach or exploring atmospheric Hell-ville. In the late afternoon, head up Mont Passot with its eight crater lakes, to catch the sunset from the summit.

    Days 14-15

    Island-hopping

Follow a morning visit to the steep rainforest-swathed Nosy Komba and its habituated black lemurs with an afternoon snorkelling or diving the multi-coloured coral reefs of Nosy Tanikely. After another night on the island, fly home directly or via Antananarivo.
