About this ebook

My people fell. My city burned. And I was sold.

Born a noble, I never expected to be bound, chained and stuck in a cage.
Yet here I am, at the mercy of a common mercenary.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
I suppose it doesn't matter. No one cares how a slave feels.
Though there is something strange about this man that draws me to him.
In the wake of losing everything, could I have possibly found something better?

Seized by a Mercenary - Kayci Morgan

    1

Brendan averted his eyes from the cages as he made his way through the market. Broken people stared back at him from behind wooden bars. They had lost everything, their homes, their freedom, their hope. But Brendan couldn’t help them. While most soldiers were selling the things they looted for coin, Brendan was doing the opposite. He was spending his pay on items stolen from those in the cages. The gold and gems he brought back would be worth much more in the east than the king’s coin.

The air reeked of unwashed bodies, blood and ash. The market hummed as thousands of soldiers, merchants and noblemen bartered over their newly acquired spoils. Everywhere people sang songs, and told tales of victory, a further insult to those huddled in cages, trying to hide their shame.

Brendan approached a table with lots of easy to carry jewelry. He didn’t know much about jewelry so he just made a pile of the most attractive necklaces, bracelets and rings on display.

    How much?

The old man behind the counter fanned himself in the stifling heat. For that? Fifty gold.

Had they not been standing in the ruins of Dar, the capitol city of Khara, it would have been a fair offer, but here, it was worth half that. Twenty.

The old man groaned, fanning himself harder. Thirty-five.

Brendan ran his foot across the sand kicking up a small cloud of dust. Twenty-five.

Twenty-eight, the merchant countered, his mouth open wide in a toothless grin.

Brendan nodded. Twenty-eight. He pulled out his pouch and began counting coin.

Lifting his head, he spotted a boy from the corner of his eye. It wasn’t a child, but a young man, definitely old enough to carry a sword. Policy dictated killing the men and only taking the women and children to be sold. Maybe some greedy soldier thought he could get some extra coin and spared the boy’s life.

The young man’s eyes betrayed him, showed he didn’t belong with the others. He sat in the little corner of his cage, not beaten, but defiant. His features were soft; silky blond hair, thick pink lips, and light blue eyes. The Kharan were known throughout the world for their beauty, but he was more attractive than most. His appearance had probably saved his life. He would be sold to some harem or brothel and there they would extinguish his fire, with beatings or drugs. In the end, he’d be defeated, just like the rest of his country.

How much for the boy? The question escaped Brendan’s lips before he was even aware of it. What was he going to do with a slave?

The old man’s eyes followed his finger. Five gold.

To carry my bags? I could buy a mule for that! Three gold.

Sold! the merchant said as he walked to the cage to retrieve the boy.

That’s when Brendan realized he overpaid.

For another two silver I’ll sell you a tunic for him.

While no one would have noticed a naked slave, Brendan didn’t feel right tromping through the woods with an unclothed boy.
