In this section, we will go through the most common questions and specialist terms to get you up to speed with the basic information you should know.

How much space does a home recording studio take up?

The space a studio takes up will vary depending on how much equipment you have. Surprisingly, it isn’t uncommon for home studios to fit in the corner of a bedroom or a spare room. When I first started my recording journey, I would record in my bedroom and was able to achieve great sounding recordings.

How Much Does a Home Recording Studio Cost?

A recording studio costs can vary dramatically depending on the equipment you choose. There can also be other overhead costs such as sound treatment. Typically, a basic home recording studio will cost under $800. If you already have a computer, then all you’d need to start recording vocals is a microphone. An audio interface may also be needed depending on the type of microphone you’re using. More on this in chapter 3.

What is an Audio Interface?

An audio interface is a hardware device that connects your XLR microphone or instrument to a computer. Its job is to convert the analog signal to a digital signal so that the computer can recognize it.

What is a digital audio interface or daw?

A digital audio interface or daw is the music creation software that your computer runs to record music.
