About this ebook

Sig wants to fly so bad he'll try just about anything. Except his element is Fire - with only a bit of hot wind thrown in. But David, his lover and partner, can fly. And their friend Zack can separate his fire and air no problem. If they can do it, so can Sig - or die trying.

A riveting, humorous tale of daredevil adventure in the desert near Las Vegas, where David gets protective, Sig soars like Ikarus, and where no dune buggies were maimed in the writing of this short Disorderly Elements story. Takes place after Book 4 ("Like a Phoenix") and in the quiet stolen moments of Book 7 ("Like a Dervish.")

    AIRBORNE

The sunrise lit up the edges of the arid mountains to the east and painted the sky in gentle, watercolor pastels. The rocky outcrop to Sig’s right cast a shadow whose chill sucked the heat from the air around it despite it being August.

    August near Las Vegas.

The heat would lean on the landscape with the weight of a hot, forged anvil in a few hours. Sig didn’t mind it much. He’d experienced worse over in the sandbox, running around in full battle gear, escorting convoys. The tank top, loose cargo pants, and a pair of ancient sneakers instead of his old combat boots were a breeze by comparison.

He drew a deep breath. This desert smelled sweeter somehow. Its dust had a flavor, a taste of its own. This part of the desert would also get fucking humid, because that’s what happens when you dam a river and make a huge lake in a hot and sunny environment.

The humid part had surprised him, and it was a surprise he could’ve lived without.

It wasn’t humid just yet, nor too hot, and he was taking advantage of the balmy breeze off the lake. He sucked down the rest of his water bottle, tossed it in the recyclables bag that hung on the aluminum pole of their tent’s car port shade, and turned toward the dune buggy their friend Zack had left behind.

He had been thinking of maybe pushing it to the dirt road, away from the tent where David was sleeping. Except the sound of its engine would echo, and David would wake up anyway.

David couldn’t catch up on foot, however, and that was a good thing. For what he was about to attempt, Sig needed both privacy and the freedom from David’s well-intentioned suggestions.

Where he would go, David wouldn’t follow him. Sig well knew how he, a man of the quiet mountains
