About the Author
Introduction
This book has been written primarily for someone considering a job as an Administrative Assistant. While there is information here that might help those who have been in the field for a while, it is primarily for those who are just starting out.
I have tried to cover all the topics you will need to prepare for a job as an Assistant as well as the skills you will need once you get hired. The tips and information included have been learned over a 30 year career in the field as well as input from a variety of other assistants, some great managers, and Human Resources experts. This book includes a number of my experiences as a Secretary, Administrative Assistant and Executive Assistant as well as the experiences of others in order to make the information real and not just theoretical.
I hope the information provided here will help you to succeed as an Administrative Assistant!
Becoming an Administrative Assistant
From the outside looking in, the role of an Administrative Assistant is frequently considered an entry-level position with limited opportunities for using one's intelligence and abilities along with limited chances for advancement. Many people who are unfamiliar with the job’s qualifications assume that it doesn’t require a lot of skills or experience.
In today's high pressure business world, managers and talent acquisition recruiters are looking for intelligent, competent people with computer, communications and organizational skills. They need Assistants who can multitask, perform critical thinking, stay organized, maintain confidentiality, meet deadlines and create well written documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
The role of Assistant is very important in today’s business world. Managers have so many demands on their time that they desperately need competent, skilled Assistants who are able to step up and be full members of the manager's team. If you are the kind of person who is able to work both independently and as a team player, be a self starter as well as take direction, who takes pride in their work, enjoys being part of a hard working group and doesn’t need to be the decision maker all the time (although you will make decisions as an assistant), this might be a good fit for you.
In a tight job market, you might want to consider a job as an administrative assistant. Frequently (although definitely not always), when companies consider cutting back on personnel, they will lay off the higher paid managers while retaining the competent (but lower paid) assistants. The assistants may then be re-assigned to other managers or given new titles and tasks. In a difficult job market, this can be an important consideration.
One drawback or downside to becoming an administrative assistant is the glass ceiling.
It is difficult but not impossible for administrative assistants to be promoted to management positions. Please check out the chapter on Promotion Opportunities for tips on how to break through and move up the ladder.
How to Find Administrative Assistant Positions. Now that you are interested in becoming an Administrative Assistant, how do you get a job? The good news is that most companies need at least one good assistant and the larger the company, the more assistants they need so
