About the Author
Jon Barth believes it is possible for everyone to experience success and Write Their Own Story. He enjoys sharing stories, tools, and resources to help people search for their purpose and strive for their potential so they can make a positive impact on the world.
Jon has over 15 years of experience as a teacher and administrator in public education and coaching experience at the junior high, high school, and college levels. He holds a Master’s degree in Education Administration from William Woods University as well as a Master’s degree in Coaching from Greenville College.
He loves spending time with his wife and their three children at their home in central Illinois, but his most important mission is to seek God’s purpose for his life and glorify Him by his life.
How to Use This Journal
Whether we realize it or not, we have the power to Write Our Own Story every day. Without this recognition, we often allow outside circumstances and other people to influence and even narrate our story by believing lies about ourselves. By gaining awareness of our power to create and Write Our Own Story, we can free ourselves to pursue excellence and reach a potential we previously could not fathom.
The objective of this journal is to help you Write Your Own Story so you can increase your impact on your students and athletes by giving them a better version of you every day.
At times, the journal challenges will ask you to work in three different time frames: past, present, and future.
It is necessary to search our past to see where we have been, how our journey has shaped our lives, and how we arrived where we are today. It is easier to connect the dots from moment to moment when looking in the rearview mirror. Looking into the past can also allow us to analyze our perceptions of events and reflect on how they have changed over time. We can take the lessons learned from past experiences, whether positive or negative, and apply them to present and future situations.
It is also critical to have an idea of where we are going. You will be asked to reflect on your visions, dreams, and desires so you can formulate a roadmap for where you are going. I would like to suggest you set a destination based on the type of person you want to be and the impact you want to have on others, rather than external forms of achievement. Having a precise idea of the person we want to become on our journey will help us make decisions when we come to a crossroads. It will also aid in getting us back on the road when we have drifted off course.
We are always adding to our story from the past, and we are creating our future one day at a time, but the only place to do those things is in the present. This journal presents you with challenges which will ask you to reflect on experiences from the past and apply it to your daily actions to form new habits. Some challenges will ask you to look at your roadmap and determine what action you can currently take to bring you one step closer to your destination. Each day’s challenge will hopefully give you a narrow focus, so you are not overwhelmed and have the confidence to make 1% improvement.
It is suggested to reflect on and respond to each journal challenge in the morning as there will often be action items for you to complete throughout the day. Sometimes you will be asked to reflect at the end of the day on the action you took and the impact it had. But, ultimately, you must complete the journal challenges when it works best for you and your schedule.
Writing Your Own Story is about finding the gifts you have inside as you search for your ultimate purpose and true potential and then giving those gifts away through the connections you create with your students and athletes.

The 12 Fundamentals of Success
The challenges of this journal have been organized into 12 Fundamentals to help as you make small daily improvements on your journey of success. Each day the challenge will come from a new fundamental, so you can continuously stretch and grow in many directions. If you would prefer to concentrate on a particular fundamental, you may use the index to find the location of the challenges for each fundamental.
The Fundamentals of Success are designed to work through an inside-out process. The fundamentals function in pairs to help us gain clarity in our mindset and perspective (inside) and then take action in our everyday lives (outside). When we are struggling with something on the outside, like Overcoming Obstacles, then we usually need to do some work on our perspective in the corresponding area, like Rising Above to gain new wisdom and understanding.

Have a Vision
It is important to have a picture of where we would like to go and what we would like to do with our lives, but it is essential to know WHO we want to be. This picture may be under constant revision, but it is vital to search
