About this ebook

Exhort One Another is a book that has 66 short devotions meant to encourage those that are going through trying times in their lives and feel so discouraged and burned out. I have been through that road due to a rare and severe cancer called multiple myeloma that left me paralyzed due to a nerve pinch caused by a bone that was damaged by the cancer and went out of its position to press on the nerve. Multiple myeloma affects bones, bone marrow and both white and red blood cells. I was told that I had only two weeks left to live and that I had become permanently paralyzed. When I heard these words, I was so devastated and realized that I could not shoulder all that on my own. I turned to God for strength and comfort. I diligently sought Him in prayer confident that He was not going to leave or abandon me. I noticed that there were so many others who go through such burdens or even worse. I then decided to compile devotions to equip and strengthen everyone that is faced with divers calamities. These devotions became a source of strength in my difficulties. I faced my trying time with a lot of hope and determination. It did not come as a surprise when I beat cancer and paralysis because I put God at the forefront of my challenges. Through these devotions, I recommend Jesus Christ the redeemer to everyone that is suffering under the burdens of this world. He holds the key to our victory and happiness. They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

Exhort One Another Devotions - Sidney Mpofu

    Abstract

A series of exhortations meant to build our trust in God so that we can go through any difficulty without fretting. A deep seated trust in the Lord disarms the devil as it becomes our shield in all his trickery. It allows us to let God work out His victory for us at His own time and ways without panicking.

I was inspired by my experience to encourage those that are going through life’s calamities. Though battling with cancer and paralysis, I realised that I did not need to wait until I am healed to strengthen others but do it while in adversity. I saw how the devil intimidates us by every means at his disposal to weaken our hold on Christ so that we jump out of God’s protection. Once we do that we become vulnerable and he does as he pleases with us. A strong faith in God is our only refuge that can conquer our fears. I therefore wrote these exhortations with the help of my wife to strengthen all those suffering or would face persecution in future. We just need as little faith as a mustard seed and we shall move mountains. Matthew 17:20.

I could not wait until I was healed because I feared I would lose many who needed help. I had to strike the metal while it was still hot. By trusting God, I felt this satisfaction and peace of mind which can only be provided by God. I am therefore sharing it with everyone who will need it. As you read the exhortations, may the Lord heal you both physically and spiritually. Surely if God is for us, no one can stand against us. (Romans 8:31)

    Acknowledgements

I would like to extended my since gratitude to my wife who has shown her unwavering commitment in me and her vows. Surely he who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favour from the lord. She is actually a rare species. I thank my mother, siblings, Bulawayo City Seventh Day Adventist Church members and the Seventh Day Adventist Church members worldwide for their amazing support. My appreciation also goes to Pastor Cliford Sibanda and Engineer Cledwin Mangunda for helping me edit this document. May God bless the Tachiona family and Brother Qhubekani Zondo for their crucial part they played in my life. Above all, may the Mighty Lord be praised for all His love and providence. Without God I would not have made it this far and would not have been able to write these exhortations.

    Introduction

Life is so unpredictable, in the midst of a good life with all the good plans, devastating circumstances can overtake us. We therefore need to be equipped with necessary tools to handle such situations. Having been slapped by a much feared and rare cancer called multiple myeloma. I realised that as human beings we are so vulnerable and can be depressed beyond recovery if we are not equipped with these tools. We need faith, hope and trust in God as our tools to sustain us in difficulty. I have compiled 66 devotions that helped me to stay positive though my situation seemed set to end my life. I pray and believe that they will be of great value to all who will read them.

Dev 1: Trust God And Never Lose Hope

Jeremiah 17:7-8 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

"We are faced with a difficult situation here, all the scans taken reveal that your spinal cord bones have been so weakened by cancer that fixation (a procedure of screwing on rods to connect bones) is not possible. All we will be able to do is to decompress the nerve that has been pinched by totally removing the bone that is out of line. Re-aligning would have problems that it would slip out again and cause another compression. I am so sorry you will not be able to sit again, besides your condition is so bad that chances of waking up are slim after the operation," explained the Neurologist visibly shaken not even looking at me in the eye.

When I heard that, somehow I did not panic but confidently said to him do not worry about the weak bones, I know my Lord is going to put strong ones which you will find when you operate. I had not spoken with the Lord about it yet but was confident that my Lord was going to do it somehow. You are giving us confidence to operate, the doctor responded surprised. He came to check with me for the next three days to see if I still stood by what I had said and make sure it was not said out of shock.

I was still very confident and by then we had sent word to a lot of people who were praying for me, so as we prayed, we knew that the church was praying too. On the day of operation, the Lord surprised the doctors and every one of us when strong bones were found. The doctors are still shocked to this day by the act of God. Had they not found strong bones, it meant that I was going to be bed ridden for the rest of my remaining life. Waking up after the operation was another big miracle for all of us. (Extracted from My Walk With God)

Just trust God with your life even if it does not seem logical, you will be in for a big surprise. He came through for me; He will come through for you if you trust Him. Today I can sit and walk, things which were foreseen as never going to happen again.

    Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for being a promise keeping God. We have no reason not to trust you with our lives. You have demonstrated to us that you care for us by sending your Son to die for us on the cross that we may be saved. You heal us of our ailments, provide food for us, supply us with rain, sunshine and everything that we need to live, yet, demand no payment from us. We praise your Holy name. Help us with a deep seated trust in you, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Dev 2: The Goodness Of The Lord

Recently one of my doctors explained to me that my recovery is a miracle from God because the length of time I spent paralyzed due to a nerve pinch before being operated was too long to allow me to walk again. They therefore cannot medically explain the recovery, let alone the speed with which the paralysis is reversing; it can only be an act of God. If the Lord is so good to me, how can I not stand on a mountain top and tell the world of His goodness? (Extracted from My Walk With God).

To some of us seeing a new year is by the grace of God so we really appreciate, but to some it might just be like any other year. Let me remind you that it is all by the mercies of our loving creator no matter how much we think it is by planning and wisdom on our part, because life does not belong in our hands. This life belongs to Christ the life giver, let us appreciate every minute that He affords us. We should neither place our trust in material things nor in people, but in God.

I have a great appreciation because I nearly lost my life despite the plans, happiness in marriage, money and education that I thought I had, none of these could save my life. I was allowed a chance to live because God loves me. I believe He has a purpose that He wants me to fulfill. I still have a race to run and victories to win for Christ. I am praying to God for strength and ability to take the vision and run with it to the ends of the earth and have someone live a life for God, only if God may help me to keep true to His word.

Look around and identify why the Lord has given you this year again to live. Find your purpose and worth, do not just enjoy being in a new year living aimlessly. Let the year add value to your spiritual life, leave a legacy that some will emulate and feel purposeful.

I will thank my Lord for each day He will give me because it is not a right that I see tomorrow but a gift from Him. Someone may look shamefully at me and say but your movement is still through aids and you cannot do things for yourself that you used to do. I tell you my brother, my sister, it could have seriously been worse. Why should I not celebrate what I have been given and that which I still have instead of mourning over the lost and what I cannot change.

In any case Romans 8:28 reads, "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according
