About this ebook

It used to be the stuff of Hollywood movies - but not anymore. Artificial Intelligence is here and it's here to stay. Everywhere we look, AI is there - on the street, in our cars, in our homes, in department stores, online.
What is facial recognition and is it keeping us safe or is it government control? Who are the voices of dissent and why are they speaking out? Can machines do everything humans can do only better? Are we headed towards a new era whereby the dangers outweigh the benefits?
Artificial Intelligence is evolving much faster than expected and is already surpassing what experts believed would be possible at this stage. While it is alarming, and in some instances for good reason, it can also have positive effects. The trick is to ensure we align the AI's goals with our own human goals. If this isn't done, instead of our greatest achievement, we might be facing our ultimate destruction.

    Introduction

It’s not just in Hollywood movies anymore. It has jumped off the screen and into the world we live in, all within a few short years. Artificial Intelligence - is it a great technological leap forward? Can it be our valuable servant or will it be our terrifying master?

From SIRI to self-driving vehicles, artificial intelligence continues to progress rather rapidly. What might have seemed impossible only a few short years ago, can and is being done today using AI machines.

We, as humans, have an intelligence that surpasses all other intelligence on Earth. Everything we have achieved as a human race has stemmed from our intelligence. For many centuries, philosophers, scientists, and psychologists have all tried to understand how we, as a species, think. How is it that humans can perceive, understand and even predict and manipulate the world in which they live? This has been the burning question for centuries.

In the field of artificial intelligence today, the stakes have been taken further still. This particular AI area attempts to not only understand but also to build intelligence using machines. Of course, there is a big difference between a machine and a human, no matter how intelligent a machine is developed to be.
