    Footnotes

To all the enduring women of the world, who have been torturing themselves daily to simply touch up or enhance their beauty. I hope this book provides some insight, reduces your stress, and maybe makes it just a little bit easier to be the most beautiful, healthy version of yourself.

    INTRODUCTION

I don’t know about you, but I always thought staying healthy would be easy. I was one of those girls who pored over Seventeen, admiring the gorgeous, confident models. I loved experimenting with beauty products and keeping up with all the cool trends. And I was a competitive runner in high school and college; my team won the Junior Olympics two years in a row, and as a high schooler I competed at the college level in long distance running. Taking care of myself was fun—there was nothing else I’d rather do!

I also come from a family of medical doctors. So when the time came to choose a career, I knew I wanted to go to medical school. When I was accepted at Semmelweis Medical School in Budapest, Hungary, I took it very seriously. I kept my hair back. I wore no makeup. I was on a mission, and I did not want to fail.

As the work and pressure mounted, exercise was the first thing to fall away. Then the healthy diet (because in a country where I didn’t speak the language, I was lucky to be able to buy food at all!). Then the sleep. Before I knew it, I was using hair extensions to camouflage my thinning, lifeless hair and tons of cover-up over my regular, stress-induced breakouts.

My turning point came during a really ordinary moment. I was sitting in my microbiology class and I found myself looking at one of my good friends. Her hair looked so beautiful, so healthy, and so strong, and mine looked so … old. It was fried, lifeless, and thin. And then it just hit me. I thought, Oh my God, I’m 23. You’re the same age. I should be at the peak of health. What am I doing wrong?

Of course, I knew exactly what I was doing wrong. With all the stress of med school, regularly missing sleep to study, gallons of coffee, and lack of exercise, I just wasn’t taking care of myself. And from my studies, I knew exactly how my actions were causing the inflammation that was fueling my breakouts and sapping my skin’s vitality.

That day, I realized no one was going to own my health but me. I decided to take action. I cut out all sugars and switched from coffee to green tea. I cut out all chemical products and camouflage and used only effective, natural products for my skin. I even had fun making my own. From my dermatology classes, I knew which chemicals were harmful and which were essential active ingredients that made the products work.

In short, I cut out the foods that were harming my skin and ate more of the foods that nourished it, got back to exercise that energized me, and used skin care products that kept my skin clean and soft and restored what was missing. It was as simple as that!

After about two months, the confidence and clarity I felt were amazing. It wasn’t just that my skin had completely healed (which it had—although my hair would still take almost another two years). It was that I had decided to own my health, and I could feel my natural beauty radiating from the inside. I felt so happy!

For example, I’ve always had dry and sensitive skin, so my skin suffered terribly in the cold Hungarian winters. I learned that I needed to use emollient creams multiple times a day to replenish my naturally weak stratum corneum (the outer layer of skin that keeps moisture in and irritants out—you’ll learn much more about that later!). Urea cream, for instance, works magic on extremely dry skin.

Of course, the best products for you have to do with your skin type: Urea cream on oily or acne-prone skin would clog pores and create a disaster! This is an obvious example, but so many women are using products that do more harm than good for their skin because they aren’t right for their skin type. Here’s the point: I had every advantage in staying healthy—I was a competitive athlete, my mother always cooked healthy food for us growing up, and I was naturally interested in looking beautiful. I even modeled while I was in medical school, as I was learning all the science behind how our bodies (particularly our skin) stay healthy! So if I had trouble taking care of myself as early as age 23, how much harder is it for women who don’t have those advantages? We’re all overwhelmed by too much information about health and beauty, and most of it comes from companies that don’t care about us—they just want our money.

But what really turned my interest in skin care into my driving mission in life was seeing my mother go through skin cancer not once, but twice. I don’t want any woman to have to experience that kind of fear and pain—or any daughter to have to witness it. Beauty is not just skin deep; it can be a matter of life and death.

Today, whenever I pass a salon, I can’t help but glance inside. It’s always more or less full. Women are coming every six weeks, touching up this and that, harming themselves with dyes and bleach. It breaks my heart, because it’s just not necessary. If you start with managing your stress, cutting out inflammatory foods, cutting out chemicals, and getting the right balance of activity and rest, you’ll stop so many problems before they start. Knowledge about skin care isn’t just power; it’s clarity and freedom, and I want to share this knowledge with every woman I meet! It might even save your life.

Discover Your Skin Type - Learn How To Get Clear Skin

First of all, we’ve never known more about how connected the systems of our body are. A healthy body—meaning a healthy digestive system, a healthy immune system, a healthy respiratory system, and a healthy mind, all working together in harmony—produce healthy skin. If something goes wrong under the surface, it’s going to show up in your skin. Your skin reveals what’s going on internally.

Think of your skin like a flower. Okay, I admit I’m not a gardener, but I do know this much: When you see a beautiful rose growing in a garden, you know that the rose you see now is a result of a complex process that began long ago. First, someone had to plant a rose seed in that soil. That seed had to receive enough water and sun at the right time. If it did, the seed produced roots, which stretched out into the soil to get the nutrients it needed. If it received enough nutrients, and enough water and sun, a green sprout broke through the soil. And if that sprout kept receiving what it needed to grow—and it was protected from running children and hungry animals— it bloomed into a rose. If anything went wrong in that process, you might see a drooping, dehydrated rose, or diseased leaves, or a plant with no blooms, or no plant at all.

Your skin works the same way. It just can’t keep a secret; it’s the first to reveal how you’ve really been treating your body, even before full-blown health problems start. When you see sunspots on someone’s skin, you know they’ve spent too much time in the sun. When you see yellowish skin and dark circles under someone’s eyes, those might be signs of a smoking habit: High levels of nicotine keep you from sleeping well (which causes the dark circles) and clogs arteries (which leads to poor circulation and yellowish skin).

At the same time, when you see radiant, beautiful, fit people, it’s usually a direct result of what they’re putting in their body and how they’re
