    Welcome! We wanted to write this book as a way to keep you motivated. If you can see clearly that you are progressing and improving, then you will feel good and learn more quickly.

    It is important to know how good your English is because:

    ●  It will help you highlight any weaknesses and strengths you have. You will easily see what you need to work on and what you are doing well with.

    ●  It will give you confidence. You will know for sure that you are doing a good job and not making mistakes when you speak.

    This book will:

    Highlight any issues you have.

    Teach you new material as you are being tested.

    Help you practice reading.

    Check your general comprehension.

    This book is for:

    ●  Beginner/elementary level English learners wishing to check their progress.

    Higher level learners wishing to review and identify any gaps they may have in their English knowledge.

    How to Use This Book

    ●  There are two types of chapter in this book. The first tests your knowledge of a specific grammar point. The second tests your general English knowledge, reading ability and general comprehension.

    ●  You will score 1 point for each question you answer or mistake you correct. It will say how many points are available in each section.

    ●  There are 300 points available in this book. So at the end, just add up all of your points and then divide them by three. This will give you your final percentage. So for example if you got 250 points, then you divide 250 by 3 which equals 83.3. So your final score is 83%

    ●  If you get over 75% then that is a good beginner level and you are ready to move onto the intermediate level

    A and The.

    We will start with the simple uses of ‘A’ and ‘The’. Please note that ‘A’ and ‘The’ are called ‘Articles’.

    Question 1:

    Please listen to the sentences and choose either ‘A’ or ‘The’.

    1. I went to a/the party last night.

    2. Can you pass me a/the blue shoes from over there.

    3. Did you like a/the film we watched?

    4. I want a/the new bag.

    Answer 1:

    1. I went to a party last night.

    2. Can you pass me the blue shoes from over there.

    3. Did you like the film we watched?

    4. I want a new bag.

    Question 2:

    Please listen to this paragraph and choose the correct article ‘A’ or ‘The’.

    I went to a/the party last night. A/The party was fun. I met a/the boy there. A/The boy was very tall. He goes to a/the same school as me. He was with a/the friend. A/The friend was called Julie. She goes to a/the different school than us.

    Answer 2:

    Listen again, but this time please check your answers.

    I went to a party last night. The party was fun. I met a boy there. The boy was very tall. He goes to the same school as me. He was with a friend. The friend was called Julie. She goes to a different school than us.

    Mini Lesson:

    ‘A’ and ‘The’ are called ‘Articles’.

    We use ‘A’ when something is not specific. It’s not an exact thing. We use this when we introduce something, because it is not specific yet. For example, ‘I met a boy’. I haven’t mentioned him before, and I’ve not given any details, so I use ‘A’.

    We use ‘The’ if we are talking about a specific thing. For example, ‘the blue shirt on my table’. We also use ‘The’ if we have already introduced the thing. For example, ‘I met a boy. The boy was very tall’.

    General English 1. Podcasts.

    Please read the questions and then the short article. Answer the questions as you read.

    Part 1.

    Questions:

    When does the author listen to podcasts?

    Why do we first say ‘a podcast’ and then ‘the podcast’?

    What does the author listen to the podcast on?

    Reading:

    Do you listen to podcasts? I listen to them in the morning while I’m exercising. I wake up, choose a podcast and then go out. Then I listen to the podcast on my phone.

    Answers:

    They listen to podcasts in the morning while exercising.

    When we first introduce the subject it is not specific, so we use ‘a’. Then we use ‘the’.

    They listen to the podcast on a mobile phone.

    Part 2.

    Questions:

    What subject should you choose?

    What subject is mentioned?

    Reading:

    The best thing to do is choose a subject that you like. Then choose a podcast that you think looks good. Maybe the subject you like is sports. Or maybe you could choose a totally different subject. But the subject must be interesting.

    Answers:

    You should choose a subject that you like.

    ‘Sport’ is mentioned.

    Part 3.

    Questions:

    What can you do on your phone?

    Is it difficult?

    Reading:

    Have you got a mobile phone? Take your phone and download a podcast app. Then open the app and you can start looking for podcasts. It’s all very easy.

    Answers:

    You can download a podcast app.

    It’s all very easy.

    Prepositions

    We are going to look at some simple uses of prepositions. For example, direction and where things are placed.

    Question 1:

    Listen to the following sentences and choose the correct prepositions.

    I am going to / from London.

    We left to / from London.

    I put the glass on / of the table.

    I want a glass on / of water.

    I will meet you at / on school.

    He is in / of the room.

    Answer 1:

    I am going to London.

    We left from London.

    I put the glass on the table.

    I want a glass of water.

    I will meet you at school.

    He is in the room.

    Question 2:

    Please put the correct prepositions in the spaces.

    Yesterday I went    London. I rode    a bus. I went    a museum. I stood in front    a picture. I like    go    museums. Later, I ate    a restaurant. I put salt    my food. I had a glass    water.

    Answer 2:

    Yesterday I went   to   London. I rode   on   a bus. I went   to    a museum. I stood in front   of   a picture. I like   to   go   to   museums. Later, I ate   at   a restaurant. I put salt   on   my food. I had a glass   of   water.
