Why did you start working in South Africa?

I studied in South Africa in 2004. I did an exchange programme with a university, and I did a photography course. In 2007, I did an internship at national newspaper – it was all very harsh news, and I was on daily assignments. I learned how to file quickly, and how to be in situations that I didn’t want to be in but had to shoot. At the same time I realised the youth in South Africa are very vocal – much more vocal than the Dutch youth – and that made me want to do a story about them.
