      Stuck in a rut with holiday decorating? Try these ideas for five new schemes that take traditional elements and give them a fresh twist

      PINECONES + PLAID

      Kick off the holiday season with a natural palette of pinecones, branches, and fresh greens accented with a pile of plaid patterns for a nostalgic yet sophisticated look

      NO-FAIL COMBINATION Brass finishes and oversize gold balls and ornaments bring a sophisticated, elegant feel to traditional plaid—a classic holiday pattern. When decorating your tree, don't overlook natural elements, like pinecones, antlers, wispy quail feathers, and waxy magnolia leaves, to add organic texture to the colorful and shiny accents.

      Pops of red, green, gray, and black help energize a base of rustic natural elements, such as pinecones and fresh greenery. This theme feels like woodland-meets-preppy, thanks to a heavy dose of silver and gold accents on ornaments, bells, and bows.

      The open growth habit of a silvertip red fir tree allows ornaments to stand out in the linear space between branches. Accents made of felt, wool, and plaid lend a cozy warmth that is carried across the settee and banister for a balanced look.       WARM WELCOME Skip the wreath and instead emphasize a special door shape with a fresh garland that’s entertwined with pinecones, ribbons, and ornaments that announce your color scheme.

      Prepare a party-ready bar cart by keeping all of your entertaining essentials in one spot. Line up mixers, liquors, and cocktail glasses on one shelf. Add nibbles, like nuts, breadsticks, and olives—in matching silver julep cups and bowls—to the top.

      BLUSH + BASHFUL

      Now here’s a color combo all Southern women can agree on—shades of pink, apricot, and coral make a beautiful splash

      PRETTY IN PINK Don’t be afraid to use nontraditional colors in your holiday decorating and wrapping. Swap in pale blush tones for the usual red, and add in lots of silver, cream, and gold. This motif can go in many directions, from luxe (with the addition of velvet and satin textures) to global (with ethnic prints and patterns that feel pulled directly from an Indian sari).

      Complement the powerful pink with a spiral arrangement of layered palm leaves. (Fresh blades are woven over a base of darker, preserved ones.) A lemon leaf garland with long ribbon streamers brings a soft contrast to the wreath’s form.

      Elegant stockings and a graceful garland accented with pink pepperberries dress up a mantel topped with frosty trees and flickering candlelight. Shades of rose and red are the classic complement for gold and silver, while a concrete mantel and chimney keep things modern.

      HOLLY + IVY

      If green is your thing, give your decor a crisp look with shades of emerald, peridot, and chartreuse that will still look fresh long after the holiday season has passed

      FRESH GREENS Sprigs of holly and ivy, accented with green grapes, pears, and apples and crisp red berries, are a traditional red-and-green holiday color combo that doesn’t feel overdone. If you don’t have a fireplace or traditional mantel indoors, hang your stockings from a cupboard or bookcase instead.

      Varying shades and heights is a design approach that rarely misses. When it comes to materials, remember our tried-and-true formula for creating centerpieces and containers with balanced interest: Include a thriller (something that pops, like paperwhites), filler (evergreen, like mini cypress), and spiller (traditional trailing ivy).
