    A Perfect Day In Copenhagen

    9am

    Breakfast

Indulge in a typically tasty breakfast: organic fruit and bread, soured milk sprinkled with brown sugar, pale Danish cheese and cold meat, and even a Danish pastry or two.

    10am

    Hit the shops

Stroll along pedestrianised Strøget, peeking into shop windows and making forays into the surrounding cobbled streets. Pop into Royal Copenhagen to admire Danish-designed home furnishings, silverware and porcelain, earmarking your favourites for later purchase.

    11am

    Coffee

Cross Kongens Nytorv and head for the pretty painted wharf side at Nyhavn, one of the city’s best people-watching places. Sit outside with a mid-morning coffee and watch the world go by.

    11.30am

    Little Mermaid

Tick her off your list by hopping aboard one of the 60-minute canal-boat tours, which depart from Nyhavn and sail all the way along the harbour. It’s a true delight to see Copenhagen from the water, and this round trip will also give you a good awareness of where major sights are in the city.

    12.30pm

    Lunchtime

Time to eat again! Wander along the harbour-side towards Frederiksholms canal, taking time to appreciate the Black Diamond and the buildings of Slotsholmen, before lunching on smørrebrød in the highly atmospheric Kanal Caféen (reservations are a must).

    2pm

    Culture fix

Spend a few hours exploring Danish history and culture, according to your interests. You’re now very close to the fabulous Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Christiansborg and the National Museum; or a five-minute bus ride will take you to fairy-tale Rosenborg Slot, full of quirky details – look out for Queen Sophie Magdalene’s lathe, Christian IV’s spyhole, and a 17th-century joke chair that squirted its victims with water.

    5pm

    Dinner

Cross the harbour onto Christianshavn for a pre-dinner evening stroll around the always-interesting Christiania. You can eat at Spiseloppen, a delightfully cosy restaurant inside the Free Town; or treat yourself at one of Christianshavn’s two Michelin-starred restaurants – Era Ora and the world-famous Noma (should you be lucky enough to get a table).

    8pm

    Opera

The stunning Opera House is on this side of the harbour – get your fix of Puccini or Bizet in a building so ultra-modern you’ll hardly know whether to look at the action on stage or the architecture.

    11pm

    On the town

At 11pm, Copenhagen’s bright young things are just beginning to head out to the city’s hyggelig bars and clubs. The Vesterbro district is
