When Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast learn that there is only one drop of maple syrup left, the erstwhile friends and neighbors each make a mad dash through the world of the refrigerator to get to it first. Madcap adventure ensues, as the two breakfast foods traverse a variety of landscapes - Broccoli Forest, Sauerkraut Peak, Chili Lagoon - in order to win the race. But when they finally get to the syrup bottle, they discover to their shock that a third party, Baron von Waffle, has reached it first...Told in rhyming verse, this tale of two frenzied foods who temporarily lose track of their friendship in the pursuit of syrup, is full of hilarious hi-jinks and creative edible environments. The text reads very well, and will keep young listeners entertained, while the colorful artwork, created with pencil and digital media, adds to the sense of fun, and will hold children's attention. Recommended to younger children who enjoy stories with a silly sense of humor, or to anyone looking for good read-aloud selections.

Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast are great friends... until they hear that there's only one drop of syrup left and they fight over who should get it. This picture book follows them as they race through a landscape of food to try to get to the syrup first. The text is rhyming couplets telling the story of their journey past (and sometimes into!) all the other food, and it is charming and funny. The illustrations are excellent. Of course in the end the two friends decide maybe sharing would be better than fighting, and the story does an excellent job of avoiding making the message in the end too (wait for it) syrupy. Heee. Recommended. Another destined for the nieces.

A few weeks ago, I read a book called Dear Dragon which was about a pen pal relationship between a little boy and a dragon but they had no idea they were writing to someone of a different species. The illustrations were on point but it was the storyline that had me looking to see what else the author had written. (His name is Josh Funk by the way.) Turns out he had another book by the snazzy title of Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast (with a sequel called The Case of the Stinky Stench due out on May 2nd). This book has fantastic illustrations by Brendan Kearney which truly bring the fridge food to life. If you're reading aloud to pre-school age children, I highly encourage you to have the kids make predictions and point out their favorite (and least favorite) food items. Otherwise, this book might be a bit of a daunting read-aloud because there are quite a few challenging words (and lots of them) per each page. It follows our two main characters, Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast, on an epic quest to reach the last drop of syrup remaining in the syrup bottle. Lots of ridiculous rhyming, competitive taunting, and delicious food items abound. 9/10 for frolicking foodie fun.Note: If you do decide to use this as a storytime read-aloud and/or you utilize this in a lesson I recommend you check out Josh's website which has a free downloadable activity kit to complement the book.
