    Easy German Dialogues - André Klein

    Introduction

    It’s not always easy to find ample opportunities for conversation practice as a language learner, especially if you don’t live in a country where your target language is spoken.

    And even if you do, sometimes people just speak too fast, and before you’ve successfully made sense of one idiom or expression, there are ten more right ahead. And when you’ve already asked your conversation partner to repeat something four times, it can get awkward quickly.

    This book is designed to provide you with real world conversational German from everyday life: a trip to the doctor's office, a stroll over the farmer's market, a brief foray into the arcane mysteries of buying a train ticket, and much more.

    However, these are not your standard textbook dialogues that list the relevant vocabulary and leave it at that. Each of the following chapters contains a little story, peculiar characters and situations to motivate you to actually figure out what is being said and how it’s done.

    Why is that important? Just like my German story series, the following dialogues are carefully crafted to help you pick up new words and grammar from context. And the more you’re actually interested in the context, i.e. curious to figure out just what exactly is being said and why, the more you’ll learn.

    Despite the simplified vocabulary and grammar appropriate for beginners and intermediates, I worked to make these dialogues as compelling as possible, so you’ll find that each of them has some conflict or theme to pull you into the flow of conversational German.

    How To Read This Book

    When it comes to getting the most out of this method, there are a number of tips and strategies, some of which I’d like to share with you right now, before you get started. Please note that these are just suggestions. Feel free to skip ahead if you already have a study routine that works for you.

    First of all, since we’re trying to glean new words and grammar structures from context, it’s very important not to look up words too quickly, and instead become somewhat comfortable with not understanding everything right off the bat. Let the language impress itself on you!

    Other books may give you a word-by-word English translation, which I intentionally left out in order not to spoil your own efforts. Why? It’s just too easy if you can bypass the process of making sense of the German text altogether, which is the whole point of this exercise. You’ll thank me later. Having said that, let’s get started!

    Step 1: Getting into the flow

    When you start with your first dialogue, try to read through it until the end, even if you feel that there are some or even many things which aren’t clear. It’s alright. There’s no pressure. Take some notes if you like, mark difficult passages, but don’t look them up just yet. Allow yourself to be eased into the flow of the language.

    Step 2: Looking up words

    After your first read, go through the dialogue again line by line. Start looking up key words here and there until you get a better idea of what’s being said. Each dialogue comes with a pre-selected German-English dictionary to help you clarify the most relevant words and expressions. Readers with digital devices are also encouraged to use the built-in dictionary

    Please try not to look up and translate every single word just yet, even if you sometimes only have a vague idea about what’s being said. Just keep going!.

    Step 3: Check your comprehension

    Once you’ve reached the end of the dialogue, you’ll find a quiz designed to boost your text comprehension. I highly recommend working through these quizzes carefully, because you’ll notice that often the mere act of reading the questions will already bolster your understanding. Note down your answers and compare them with the answer key at the end of this book. Convenient links for jumping back and forth are provided in the text.

    If everything is correct, great! Feel free to move on to the next dialogue. If you got many answers wrong, take a closer look at the relevant passages.

    Were there certain words that you misunderstood? Was it perhaps a certain grammatical structure that tripped you up? An irregular conjugation or declension? Now you can look up more words, until your own understanding matches the answers provided in the quizzes.

    Step 4: Repetition and retention

    While it’s very easy to look up new words, it’s just as easy to forget them. I highly recommend keeping a learning journal in which you note down what you’ve learned during each session, and to revisit it on a regular basis.
