How to Use This Book
This book has been created to help you achieve the highest possible Occupational English Test (OET) score. Each part includes easy-to-learn strategies and relevant test-taking tips. There’s also a weekly study planner, access to listening tracks, sample writing answers and a full-length Practice Test with Writing and Speaking sections specific to the Nursing and Medicine healthcare professions. Follow the steps below to get the best use from this book.
Step One: Read Part One
In the first part of this book, you will be given an overview of OET, learn what to expect on Test Day, and learn about the key strategies to help you achieve a high score.
Step Two: Fill Out Your Study Planner
OET is a high stakes test. If you want to score well, you cannot squeeze all of your study time into one week. Before getting started with the exercises in this book, you should turn to chapter 2 and fill out your study planner with realistic study goals. You should consider how many days you have until you take OET and how much time you will realistically be able to dedicate to revising every day. Remember that if you have worked all day, you may not have the energy to learn new strategies. Instead, use the time to revise the parts of the test you have already mastered, and save the more challenging parts for when you are fresh and rested.
Step Three: Sharpen Your Skills
This book contains exercises and strategies for correctly answering each section of OET. The most important strategies for your success are highlighted, so you can easily refer to them. At the end of each section, you will find practice questions.
Once you have completed the questions, turn to the answers and mark your work. Check through any incorrect answers, using the listening scripts at the back of the chapter if needed.
Step Four: Use the Online Audio
Part Two and the full-length Practice Test at the end of this book include audio. You can access the audio tracks for the Listening section and the full length Practice Test directly in the ebook. You can also register online at kaptest.com/booksonline to access your audio and other online resources. Once you’ve registered, log in at kaptest.com/login. Additionally, after registering, you can download the Kaplan Mobile Prep app on Google Play or the App Store from your Android or iOS device.
Step Five: Take Kaplan’s OET Practice Test
After practising the strategies for OET, you should use the Practice Test as a test run for the real thing. After taking the test, use the answer key to score the Listening and Reading sections of your Practice Test, and use the marking criteria for the Speaking and Writing sections to grade your work.
Step Six: Review
Return to Parts Two, Three, Four and Five of this book, and review those sections of the test where your performance was weak. Read the Tips for the Final Week to make sure you are fully prepared on Test Day.
Follow these six steps, and you can be confident that you are truly ready for OET.

Understanding OET
Before getting started with the content of OET, let’s look at some background information about the test.
What is OET?
The Occupational English Test (OET) was developed to test healthcare professionals’ English communication abilities. OET tests English language ability in four areas: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Test-takers will need to demonstrate their ability to understand and answer questions about general healthcare consultations and presentations, in addition to texts in a general healthcare setting. Test-takers are required to write accurate, professional letters with the aid of prompts and use speaking prompts to carry out appropriate and effective conversations with patients, relating to specific healthcare professions.
Who Produces OET?
OET was developed by Professor Tim McNamara at the University of Melbourne. It has been owned and produced by Cambridge Box Hill Language Assessment Trust – a venture between Cambridge English and Box Hill Institute – since 2013.
Which Version of OET?
OET can be taken by healthcare professions in any of the following 12 professions: Dentistry, Dietetics, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Radiography, Speech Pathology and Veterinary Science. The Reading and Listening parts of this book are relevant to all 12 healthcare professions. The Speaking and Writing parts of this book cover Nursing and Medicine specific test. Please note that if you are a healthcare professional from a different profession, the Speaking and Writing sections of your test will vary from the content provided in this book.
When was OET Updated?
In September 2018, Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment launched an updated format of OET in the Reading and Listening sections of the test, to more accurately assess the English language abilities of test-takers in a healthcare setting, and created additional assessment criteria for the Speaking Test. In 2019, the assessment criteria for the Writing Test was updated. The content in this book discusses all of these updates.
How to apply for OET?
You can apply to take OET by visiting www.occupationalenglishtest.org/apply-oet/. When you register to take OET, you might only be able to select from the next two available test dates, so you should aim to begin revising for the test before applying. To apply online, you will need to refer to an identification document and upload a colour passport photograph of yourself.
An Overview of OET
Format and Content
OET is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes long and consists of 42 Listening questions, 42 Reading questions, 2 Speaking role-plays and 1 Writing task. The following chart gives a breakdown of times for each part of the OET.
Scoring
In OET, candidates receive a numerical score ranging from 0 to 500 in ten-point increments (e.g. 350, 360, 370…). The numerical scores will be mapped to a separate letter grade for each section of the test, ranging from A (highest) to E (lowest). There is no overall grade
Timing
OET is a timed test. This means that your score greatly depends on being able to complete the questions within the time allowed.
We will indicate the amount of time you will be given to complete each part of the test at the beginning of each chapter. In the Listening Test, you will not need to time yourself, as you will be advised when to answer questions while you listen to the recording, but you will still need to keep up with the pace of the recording. At first, you may not feel you have enough time to answer the questions and complete the tasks effectively. However, by practising the strategies in this book, you should be able to get through all of the test questions in the time provided. Remember that even if you are not able to complete a whole section within the time limit, you should still include an answer – even if it is a guess – on your answer sheet. You may choose the correct answer by chance and gain an additional point; if you leave those questions unanswered, you will receive no points.
As you go through the book, pay attention to the amount of time you spend answering questions and completing tasks; note when you are moving too slowly, and practise speaking, writing and answering questions more quickly. When you are ready to take the Practice Test, be sure to time yourself very carefully, to give yourself the most realistic test experience possible and to show you exactly where you need improvement.

Study Planner

Study Planner
On the next two pages, you will find a couple of five-week calendars. Use these calendars to fill in a specific study schedule. Be realistic about the amount of time you have to study and practise your English language skills. Update your schedule as necessary.
Do not forget to schedule time to take the Practice Test, mark your Practice Test, and review any part of the test where you struggled along with your schedule for looking through the rest of the book. Take the Practice Test after you have looked at all of the other chapters of the book and completed all of the exercises. Take the Practice Test as if it were the real thing: find a quiet place where you will not be interrupted, and take it in one session. Time yourself accurately. This will help to prepare you for the actual test.
General Strategies for OET
Look through the tips in this section to make sure you are aware of the practical steps you should take before Test Day. This section also contains tips on how and how often to revise. All OET test-takers are already familiar with high-pressure test situations, but each test is different and requires different preparation and materials, so make sure you're aware of what you need to do before you take
