With mounting revulsion Maddy silenced the television documentary on parasites, those filthy bloodsuckers that lived off people and animals.

Perched on the edge of the couch cushion, her foot tapped out a string of Morse code to the universe. The graphic image of a tick attaching itself to a dog forced her to look away and cast a glance at Theo, her balding, overweight husband, reclining at the other end of the couch, reading a paperback William Gibson novel.

He finally turned the page he'd been staring at for the last five minutes. Maddy saw her opening, and cleared her throat.

Boy, you know, this thing is really—

Itchy. I know, Maddy, Theo agreed, giving her his trademark Theo Loiselle sigh, a steam engine doing what it does best - letting off steam, slowly, under pressure, threatening to blow and injure anyone not vigilant enough who stood too close.

Aw, Babe . . . have some sympathy, she whined. You know how much I hate having this. She nodded at her right arm, encased in white plaster from the elbow down to the second knuckles of her hand, and now, some four weeks after the incident, not-so-white around the edges. She scrunched her chin and mouth up in her best B-movie actress pout.

Theo squinted at the television. That's disgusting, he said about whatever was being shown.

She had enough of parasites and wouldn't turn her gaze to look at the image.

Hey, Theo exclaimed, I forgot to tell you! Steve showed up for work yesterday with his head shaved so short that he's almost bald.

Really? she replied. He looks good with long hair, especially since he got rid of that silly manbun. You know, we should invite him and Jan over for supper one of these nights. It's been a while, she reflected.
