Arts and Crafts
Although Arts and Crafts is one of the most influential design movements in history, some critics would say that it is not really a style – more a design ethos. For many people, however, it is certainly an ethos to aspire to, and one that is very close to my own heart.
You could argue that the movement is an offshoot of Victorian gothic revival, but the approach to design offered through the likes of John Ruskin, Pugin and, most famously, William Morris, would inspire some of the greatest architectural minds, from Charles Rennie Mackintosh to Edwin Lutyens.
It is a style that is particularly welcoming, and a property from this period is not just a house: it is truly a home. It is somewhere you can cosy down next to a roaring fire, perch on a window seat with a book, or celebrate the festive season with boughs of holly to complement the nature-inspired textiles and detailing of period interiors.
