WATCHING a gang of starlings swinging from a fat-ball holder, or a charm of goldfinches bickering over the sunflower-seed feeder, is a joy. However, feeders empty quickly, and replenishing them year-round costs a lot of money. I spend over £100 a year on bird food, and I’m careful about what I buy.
