long, long time ago, back when I was a skinny little high school freshman with a haircut, I’d spend my free time in the school’s modest library reading every rock- or guitar-related book I could was centered around Sam and Diane) — that listed around 25 of rock’s greatest guitarists (the list included Nils Lofgren, which I thought was pretty neat). I’ll never forget the intriguing way the author described Jeff Beck — “The guitar player’s guitar player.” It just sounded so elite, so cool, so . One could argue that that obscure little memory from bygone days was the catalyst for this month’s “Jeff Beck: The guitar hero’s guitar hero” cover story. Thankfully, writer David Von Bader fleshed it out — and made it a reality — by getting respected players from different genres and generations to back up that mysterious author’s claim.
