      Prologue

      Brandon and I had just returned from our amazing honeymoon in Paris. But the honeymoon was, indeed, over. As we reached the front door, Brandon's cell phone buzzed. He pulled his phone out of his pocket. He checked the screen.

      Santa Barbara Police. I should get this, Brandon said.

      He answered. I could tell by the look on his face that it was bad news. After a moment he thanked the police officer on the other end of the phone and told them that he would be right over.

      Antonio, why don't you run along ahead and help Grandma and Grandpa. I need to go check on something at work. I'm afraid that it can't wait. But Ashley will join you and Grandma and Grandpa in a minute.

      Okay. I'll save you something to eat, replied Antonio as he bounded up the steps and through the front door.

      What's wrong at work? I asked.

      Nothing. I didn't want to upset Antonio until we know what is going on. Gina was found passed out in her townhouse. The police and paramedics are there now. They found some empty pill bottles. They don't know what she took or how bad it is.

      Oh my gosh! I know Gina is not our favorite person, but . . .

      I know.

      Oh, and poor Antonio.

      That's why we can't say anything to him until we know what we are dealing with. I'm going to head over now. I'll call you once I know something. We'll figure out what to do from there, said Brandon.

      I nodded my head. I kissed Brandon on the cheek. He got into his car and I watched him drive away. I thought about all we had been through recently. I thought about how Gina Arlotti had turned our lives upside down in both troubling and wonderful ways.

      I thought about how things seemed like they were working out for Gina. She liked the position Brandon established for her at Jacqueline. Gina actually seemed happy. Everything seemed to be great for all of us. Now all I could do was think about the tragic call from the police and wonder what we might learn next.

      Chapter 1

      Brandon had called me from the hospital with an update on Gina's condition. She had  overdosed on sleeping pills. Thankfully, the paramedics who had arrived on the scene worked quickly. They were credited with saving her life. The ER team at the hospital made certain that no trace of the pills remained in her system and that her condition was stable.

      Brandon called again to let me know that Gina had been transferred to a room and was under careful watch. It was still uncertain whether the overdose was accidental or not, but it didn't look good. Brandon said he was on his way home. It had been twenty minutes since his last call, so I expected him any moment.

      I sat in the living room with Brandon's parents. Antonio was already in bed and asleep. He thought that Brandon just needed to go into the office and was working late. I had no idea what we were going to tell him about Gina.

      The front door signal from our alarm system beeped that the door was open.

      That must be Brandon, I said to his parents.

      A moment later Brandon walked into the living room and sat down beside me on the couch.

      You look exhausted, said Brandon's mother.

      Well, I certainly wasn't expecting to spend the evening in the hospital waiting room, he replied. Is Antonio already in bed?

      Yes, I answered. I checked on him a little while ago. He is sound asleep.

      Good, Brandon said. Then he continued.

      I'm not sure that we know much more than what I told you on the phone. Gina is out of the woods as far as the overdose being life threatening. The doctors don't believe there is any permanent damage, but they are running tests.

      Do they think that she may have overdosed on purpose? She didn't seem to be giving any signs that she was unhappy, I said.
