Strong breezes test Frostbite racers
Alton Water Fox’s Chandlery & Anglian Water Frostbite Series saw 93 entries from 19 clubs, including visitors from far afield who turned up for just one or two weekends.
It will be forever remembered as the windy series, with none of the usual snow, ice and bone-chilling winds, but this time Storms Ciara and Dennis and a near miss by Jorge. The final day was no exception, with a gusty 20mph+ southwesterly.
The leaders changed over the final three weeks, with the singlehanders enjoying the strong breezes and some of the doublehanders not venturing out. Having had to cancel racing on two Sundays, 15 races were sailed of the planned 18, giving sailors five discards.
Overall series winner was Rheanna Pavey (Stour) in a Laser Radial, with Stephen Videlo/Ethan Davey (Waldringfield) in an RS200 claiming second and Ben Powell (Tattingstone Valley) in an RS Aero 7 third. The wind saw singlehanders take six of the top 10 places in the overall results. A special award went to the first female helm not in the main prizes, Phoebe Willcocks in an RS Aero 5. Best club was Waldringfield.
Fleet winners included: Fast: 1st Ady Pells (Finn, Harwich Town), 2nd Didge Everett (Finn, Harwich Town), 3rd Lawrence Baker (Hadron, Deben); Asymmetric: 1st Stephen Videlo/Ethan Davey (RS200, Waldringfield), 2nd Alan Krailing/Charlotte Stewart (RS200, Waldringfield), 3rd Graham Seabrook/Charlotte Norrbom (Laser Vago XD, Deben); Laser: 1st Rheanna Pavey (Stour), 2nd Harry Wallhead (Royal Harwich), 3rd Pete Kyne (Brightlingsea); Medium: 1st Ben Powell (RS Aero, Tattingstone
