Cu acțiunea plasată în America secolului al XVII‑lea, într‑o colonie puritană din împrejurimile orașului Boston, Massachusetts, Litera stacojie spune povestea lui Hester Prynne, care rămâne însărcinată în urma unei aventuri extraconjugale și dă naștere unei fiice, Pearl, fapt pentru care este condamnată de comunitate la moarte, iar ulterior să poarte litera „A“ – de la adulter – ţesută pe veșminte în culoarea stacojie. De-a lungul cărții, considerată capodopera sa și unul dintre cele mai bune romane americane ale secolului al XIX-lea, Hawthorne explorează temele păcatului, vinovăţiei, pedepsei, căinţei și ispășirii.
Litera stacojie nu e un simplu roman istoric bine informat; într-o proiecţie complexă ce păstrează cu desăvârşită ştiinţă echilibrul între trecut şi prezent, este o analiză subtilă a sufletului bântuit de mari chinuri. Litera stacojie A, stigmatizând un trup de femeie, nu e doar un semn al unei epoci sălbatice, ci şi al unei permanente suferinţe a fiinţei trăind tragedia pasiunii, în căutarea zadarnică a fericirii.

Nathaniel Hawthorne
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born is Salem, Massachusetts in 1804. His father died when he was four years old. His first novel, Fanshawe, was published anonymously at his own expense in 1828. He later disowned the novel and burned the remaining copies. For the next twenty years he made his living as a writer of tales and children's stories. He assured his reputation with the publication of The Scarlet Letter in 1850 and The House of the Seven Gables the following year. In 1853 he was appointed consul in Liverpool, England, where he lived for four years. He died in 1864.
