Transformative Experiences, Psychiatric Research, and Informed Consent: Transformational Stories, #2
()
About this ebook
This book takes a critical look at psychiatric research, factors which compromise its integrity and which may steer us from paths that lead to healing. The lack of informed consent is a major problem in research, in which subjects are in emotional distress. This work suggests an alternative vision, one backed by scientific research and which can be lifesaving for persons going through crisis. Read this work if you want to take an independent look at the science involved, and a more effective way to help people.

The author, who writes in a variety of genres, sometimes describes his spiritual journey with an imaginary companion. This companion helps him to reflect about the deeper meaning of life. Having degrees in philosophy and psychology, having written creative fiction, worked extensively with dream symbolism, and having symbolic experiences has helped the author to imagine such journeys.

INTRODUCTION
THIS WORK WAS PRESENTED at a professional conference some years ago on the topic of ethics in medical research. As stated on a book that followed the proceedings, it was held in response to the National Bioethics Advisory Commission.* The presentations were also filmed by a CBS News 60 Minutes crew. Although my material was not used, I can’t help but feel that broad vision papers are also newsworthy. Rather than a new, unheard injustice to grab a headline, I offered a synthesis of factual information and a vision for a new direction. Just as the corona virus has presented a widespread and real risk of death if not addressed correctly, so too is the consequence of science misused in matters of life and death.
To encourage and point toward a positive direction for change, I have inverted the title of the publication to read first Transformative Experiences.
The positive valuation of a person’s experience is the starting point for any reform in the field of psychiatry and its research. I’m also convinced that deep down, whether you are dealing with a person or a society in crisis, that what matters most – even more than good science – are feelings of the heart.
Surprisingly, I could not
