      The old hotel looked out over the ocean, as if it had grown from the rocks and sea rather than been built from the remains of boats that crashed against the shore. But the distinction held little meaning. It had seen better days — glorious days, I’m sure — but for us, it was like coming home. For us, her scars were as beautiful as her brass fixtures and gas lamps.

      Marc and I were settling in for a week of relaxation after several long months of work. The island was quiet and remote, and the air was delightfully cooler than in the city. Our room had a view of the waves and lighthouse, which meant we fell asleep each night to the sound of the sea and the occasional ringing of the buoy bells in the harbor.

      We unpacked, hanging out clothes in the closet and arranging a bar on top of one of the dressers. We came prepared, as we were prone to do, and it was already looking like a beautiful week: clear skies, highs of seventy-five degrees, and sunsets so glorious you could frame them.
