About this ebook

  • A man and a woman take a dark, snowy train ride to the “edge of the world” to meet the child they intend to adopt. During their unintentionally extended stay at a formerly grand hotel full of eccentric and sometimes unsettling patrons, the true purpose for their journey is tested far beyond their expectations
  • Moody, cinematic, and hypnotic, What Happens At Night is an allegorical story about our shifting desires, and the uncertainty of reality, that recalls The Comfort of Strangers by Ian McEwan and The Castle by Franz Kafka, or Undermajor Domo Minor by Patrick DeWitt
  • Beloved and critically acclaimed author Peter Cameron expertly creates a universe within the aging hotel: a place where everything flavored with a film-noirish absurdism; it always seems to be nighttime and there’s little distinction between what’s real and what’s imagined, and the lines between dream and reality are increasingly woozy, though the characters and their motivations are vividly drawn. The result is an unsettling fable with the propulsive, addictive quality of a mystery novel
  • Peter Cameron is the author of three collections of stories and eight novels, including Someday This Pain Will Be Useful To You and Coral Glynn.
  • Cameron lives in Sandgate, Vermont.

I'm not even sure how to describe what I read. This is one strange book, but because of its strangeness, it's bleak atmosphere, I found it intriguing. I had to find out what was going on. A couple arrive at a deserted train station in a European city. They have come to adopt a child. The woman is dying and this is the only place that would allow them to adopt. A grand hotel peopled by some very strange people, a healer, a debauched business man, a stoic bartender. Who are these people. Why do they stay here? So, as I read I thought one way, than another. A real mind bender of a read. I think, and make note of the think, because even after finishing I'm not quite sure I'm right, that I figured it out. A challenging story, but somehow enticing nonetheless.
