ABOUT THE AUTHOR
GRATITUDE
ENJOYED ‘PEN, INK AND WATERCOLOR SKETCHING’?
INTRODUCTION
I started sketching at a young age. But I started using a pen to sketch only a few years ago. I had painted many watercolor illustrations before I got acquainted with the power of the pen. But when I combined watercolor with pen sketching, a different kind of magic happened.
I fell in love with the art of pen-ink-watercolor illustrations when I understood the power of textures and contrast. Together, pen and ink/watercolors can be used to create some exquisitely detailed textures.
Pen-ink-watercolor sketching can be an anytime/anywhere activity. It’s very convenient too, due to the simplicity of the materials and minimal post-painting cleanup.
Who Is This Book For?
The focus of this book is on sketching and painting using pens, ink, and watercolor. Each of these mediums has its own charm. But together, they pack a mighty punch. Using these three mediums together can create some unique and very interesting effects in the illustrations.
Are you interested in learning hands-on pen-ink-watercolor illustrations, from simple to complex subjects? Then this book is for you.
Have you sketched using ballpoint pens/gel pens/technical pens/fountain pens before and want to explore further possibilities? Then this book is for you.
Have you worked with watercolor before and would love learning about augmenting your watercolor illustrations with pen and ink? Then this book is for you.
Do you draw in other mediums and think that ink/watercolor is a daunting and unforgiving medium?
Then this book is definitely for you.
About This Book
In this book, we will start by learning to paint this monochrome illustration using pens and black ink.
Then we will move to paint various colorful illustrations using pens, ink, and watercolor.
Since the real learning happens by doing, we will learn to paint each illustration step-by-step.
During each step, I will explain the logic behind the lines, the colors and how to take advantage of the ‘happy accidents’ that the watercolor offers.
What Skills Do You Need to Begin?
If you are already conversant with sketching and shading techniques, you can really hit the ground running with this book.
However, being an expert in pencil/pen drawing is not a pre-requisite for learning from this book.
If you are a novice at sketching/painting, worry not!
This book will hold your hand (metaphorically, of course) and guide you through the complete process of pen-ink-watercolor painting.
For each demonstration, I will begin with the basics. Anyone, even a novice, will be able to paint if they follow the instructions diligently.
Ink/watercolor painting can be learned as a separate art form to pen drawing, or it can be combined with pen drawing to lend a unique look to your illustrations.
