      Nearly two thousand years later, almost 24 million Americans suffer from a disease called diabetes—and a fourth of them don’t even know they have it! Diabetes kills more people than AIDS and breast cancer combined and reportedly ranks as the sixth leading cause of death by disease among adults in America. ¹ The sad reality is that it may rank much higher because research shows that diabetes is underreported as a cause of death. Studies have found that diabetes was only listed as an underlying cause of death on 10 to 15 percent of death certificates when the decedent suffered from the disease. ²

      The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that by 2030, the number of individuals with diabetes worldwide will double. That means we could see the number of people suffering from diabetes worldwide reach as high as 360 million within the next twenty years.³

      Within the United States, type 2 diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate. Approximately one out of ten Americans age twenty and older has diabetes.⁴ And the number of children being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes is growing at
