How to be Truly Happy in Life Secrets to Living a Content Life, not just Happy - Jennifer N. Smith
Introduction
What makes a person happy?
There’s no fixed answer to this. Every human being on this planet is different, and they want different things from life. Ideally, getting what they want from life would make them happy, but that’s not what happens in most cases.
For some people, happiness may seem like a myth. There are people who find it difficult to be happy in their lives. It doesn’t mean that their lives are lacking in any way, but because they don’t know how to be happy. Money alone cannot make a person happy; neither can fame or success. A person can be happy with having the minimum necessities of life, while someone else can’t be happy after owning half the world.
Happiness is complicated, to say the least. This is something psychologists and therapists, scientists and sociologists have been searching for decades. Everyone wants to know the formula to be happy, and to make people happy.
My book "How to be Truly Happy in Life: Secrets to Living a Content Life, not just a happy one" is also a search for happiness. I am neither an expert on human emotions nor somebody enlightened. Still, I thought of writing this book because I, personally, consider myself to be happy. Not just happy, I am fortunate enough to consider myself to be a content person. That, in my opinion, is what happiness is all about.
This book isn’t really about the social dynamics or the psychology behind being a happier person than you already are, but simply what I believe in. This book contains my thoughts and my journey to become a happier person than I was at one point of in life, and to recognize what I needed in life to be content.
Thank you for reading my book.
Chapter 1
Who is a Happy Person?
It’s not easy to understand if a person is happy or not. When you are meeting someone for the first time, you can never be sure whether the person is happy with their life, or just maintaining a facade on the outside. Even someone who smiles all day can be hiding a world of pain inside them; a person who always seems so friendly may have severe problems of their own.
What you see on the outside is usually not what is going on inside a person. The way that society deems a person to be happy or unhappy isn’t the true picture everywhere. Naturally, we would consider a professionally successful person, a rich person or a famous person to be automatically happy, but the reality is very different.
The truth is never what we see from the outside, and a smiling person may not be a happy person. There are some subtler signs that you can find in a person which can be indicators of happiness. Over the years, I have noticed these signs in people who I think are truly happy on the inside. You can go through the list to check if you can find these traits in the people around you, as well.
They are Content with What They Have
There are some people who never seem to be content with what they already have. Be it their homes, their jobs, their families, their social standings or their possessions, they never seem to be satisfied.
I’m pretty sure you’ve seen these people around you everywhere: teenagers who want to change their smartphones every two months, successful businesspeople who are constantly upgrading their gadgets, cars and wardrobes, and parents who seem to persistently pushing their children to perfection. They are almost never satisfied with what they have, but always think about what they don’t have! If they have the latest smart phones, they’ll be hankering for a new laptop; if their children are doing good at school, overambitious parents would pressure them to be better at sports or other activities.
Happy people, on the other hand, are always grateful with what they have, at any point of their lives. They might have a smaller house, a lower-paying job, affordable clothes instead of couture and outdated gadgets, but they’ll still be content with their situation in life. If they are religious people, they’ll be thankful to the Creator for what they have been bestowed with. I am yet to see a truly happy people who hanker after what they don’t have in life.
They are Fair to Others
People who are happy abide by the Golden Rule of society: Do Unto Others as You Would Have Them Do Unto You. They aren’t just nice to people because of what others can do for them, but because everyone deserves to be respected. Happy people are respectful and sensitive to other’s needs, and they are known to be compassionate and kind. They don’t say unkind things about others, they rarely gossip or spread rumors about other people, and they don’t judge anyone harshly. Happy people treat others – loved ones, acquaintances and strangers – exactly the way they want to be treated by other people.
It is mostly people who are dissatisfied with their own lives who
