About this ebook

Well-being is not the same as happiness. Broadly speaking, well-being is a state of temporary satisfaction, while happiness is a mysterious state of full satisfaction, which lasts over time, being difficult to know what makes individuals happy and incentivize them to really pursue and achieve happiness.

Likewise, seeking and conquering happiness is a matter of attitudes and leading an exemplary and virtuous life, assuming responsibilities with society and the Lord, even challenging adversities and the harsh realities of life.

And although it is very difficult to reach happiness, in this postmodern age, in which it is erroneously endorsed that material success is the basis of happiness (the results of various economic studies go in other way), we can conquer it, in accordance with principles, morals, ethics, religious beliefs, appropriate attitudes and the best decisions...

Reaching Happiness - Rolando José Olivo

    I. INTRODUCTION

Too much has been written and spoken about happiness, which is often confused with well-being. Even throughout history, researchers (from Greek philosophers to modern researchers) have tried to define it and find out what makes people happy.

Currently, there are no definitive answers to these issues, considering that the concept of happiness is broad, complex and diffuse, and can be raised differently by each one. In the same way, it is also difficult to know what makes individuals happy and to incentivize them, so that they can truly pursue and achieve happiness.

Likewise, the immense complexity of the mystery of happiness resembles that of the meaning of human life (the most difficult question that philosophers have asked for centuries).

This publication provides relevant guidelines and orientations on how to achieve happiness, emphasizing that this is more a matter of attitudes and leading an exemplary and virtuous life, assuming responsibilities with others and fulfilling religious obligations, in opposition to adversities and the harsh realities of life. Furthermore, it is false that enrichment generates happiness (the richest countries are not those that reflect higher levels of happiness).

In this regard, this literary work is divided into the following main chapters:

    II. Well-Being and Human Needs.

    III. The Pursuit of Happiness.

    IV. The Complex Human Nature.

    V. The Adverse Human Qualities.

    VI. The Favorable Human Qualities.

VII. The Great Problems of Happiness.

    VIII. Reaching Happiness.

IX. The Decalogue of an Exemplary and Virtuous Life.

In the Chapter II. Well-Being and Human Needs, the notions of well-being and happiness are mentioned, and human needs are explained, according to the approach of Abraham Maslow; insisting that human beings are insatiable (there is no point of maximum satisfaction and when a need is fulfilled, others arise, and so on) and there are two groups of needs: a) primary (physiological and safety), and b) fundamental (belongingness, esteem and self-actualization). Therefore, the secret to reaching happiness is closely related to the continuous satisfaction of the aforementioned fundamental needs.

While the Chapter III. The Pursuit of Happiness presents a brief summary of attempts made to understand happiness and conclusions of current investigations. In the same way, the surprising results of an exercise that compares income and happiness, in almost all countries of the world (year 2018) are shown. However, these are not very intuitive (aligned with the Easterlin paradox) and contrary to popular beliefs, which state that enrichment and quality of life bring greater happiness.

In the Chapter IV. The Complex Human Nature, the rational and mimetic qualities of human beings are examined, which are effective to survive (more in primitive times) but harmful to achieve happiness.

In accordance with the complex human nature, in the Chapter V. The Adverse Human Qualities various negative emotional states are explained (merit-fault double standard, envy, frustration, resentment, depression, burn-out, bore-out and chronic dissatisfaction) that must be adequately mitigated, for the sake of achieving happiness.

In the Chapter VI. The Favorable Human Qualities some faculties (cognitive ability, love, motivation and resilience) are evaluated. These allow to resist tragedies and adverse events, recover through the use of the best abilities and skills, and rebuild life, in order to meet an existential goal and achieve happiness.

The Chapter VII. The Great Problems of Happiness reveals why happiness is so difficult to achieve, posing several drawbacks (uncertainty about expectations and needs, imbalance between human needs, short-term tendency of the human mind, longings and needs that don´t end, adverse emotional responses, resentment, lack of love in humanity, demotivation, absence of resilient attitudes and wrong dreams), and stating that happiness depends, in a greater degree, on various attitudes (which overcome the circumstances and the conditions of life).

The Chapter VIII. Reaching Happiness provides guidelines and recommendations that can lead to achieving happiness. And the Chapter IX. The Decalogue of an Exemplary and Virtuous Life reinforces the previous vision, based on principles, morals, ethics and religious beliefs, since happiness is a matter that transcends the spiritual-religious level.

Finally, it should be noted that it is very difficult to conquer happiness due to the perverse influence of postmodern thought that stimulates enrichment at all costs, hyperconsumption, attachment to fashions, desires to own more and more goods and enjoy all kind of luxuries and comforts, the denial of the meaning of life, contempt for religions and the false idea that material success is the basis of happiness. In this sense, achieving happiness is an idealistic-religious and not a secular-materialist matter, which is directly linked to the virtues and best human qualities. Of course, we can achieve happiness! What we need is to obey conscience, follow ethical guidelines, have appropriate attitudes and make the best decisions...

    II. WELL-BEING AND HUMAN NEEDS

Well-being is not the same as happiness. In general terms, well-being is a state of temporary satisfaction, while happiness is a mysterious state of full satisfaction, which lasts over time.

Certainly, well-being is closely related to continuous satisfaction of needs, and happiness (which depends on the complex human nature, expectations and needs) is difficult to achieve.

Moreover, the human beings live immersed in a continuous cycle of need-achievement-need. When one aspiration is satisfied, others arise, and so on. Therefore, there is no optimal state of maximum satisfaction and human well-being is practically insatiable.

Even this cycle of non-conformity and dissatisfaction is extremely dangerous. Although it defies the monotony that characterizes animal species, contributes to find a purpose for life and
