Introduction
Inge Sebyan Black
This is the fourth edition of the Art of Investigative Interviewing, but it was more fitting to rename it, "Investigations and the Art of the Interview," because the art is in the interview and I wanted to include the investigation process from the preparation through testifying in court. Chuck Yeschke, a friend and mentor, who authored the first and second editions, passed away in 2006. In 2012 I was asked write the third edition of The Art of Investigative Interviewing, without anyone knowing we had known each other for more than 30 years. I was honored and privileged to be asked to write the third edition, because of the connection I had to both Chuck and to the subject matter.
When I started my career in security management after my degrees in Police Science, Criminal Justice subsequently earning my Law Enforcement/POST license, most of my peers and definitely the majority of my predecessors had come from either a military background or a law enforcement background. The interviewing techniques used through the 1980s, which incorporated coercion and confrontation, are definitely different from the interview techniques used today. No matter the training or specific technique you have or will receive, your skills will continue to develop, and through continuous practice, your interviewing style will be unique to you.
My philosophy is to approach each interview with the knowledge that there is a high probability that you may only get one chance at interviewing your subject, so it is critical that you are fully prepared. Being prepared will make the difference between having a successful interview or an unsuccessful one.
I asked Larry Fennelly, my very dear friend, mentor, and the most dedicated person that I have ever met in my 42 years in security, to co-author this fourth edition alongside me. Our relationship started in 1982 when Larry asked me to join the Crime Prevention Council for ASIS International. We co-presented the first session of its kind in 1983, titled Rape and Violent Crime.
Since then, we have co-presented on many topics at ASIS International Annual Conference, now known as ASIS GSX.
In 1994 Larry asked me to write a chapter on domestic violence, turning into multiple editions over the last 30 years. I have also authored chapters in many of Larry’s books since then. I have been so fortunate to have had the privilege of working with him, presenting with him, and writing with him. I will always aspire to being as good of a mentor and friend as Larry has been to me.
Our goal in writing this book is to pass along some of the skills we have learned through the many years. We hope this might be a helpful guide for new interviewers or those who only rarely conduct interviews but who need the information as much as skilled interviewers. Interviewers have to draw on elements from psychology, philosophy, and sociology and from their own personal empathy, respect, and compassion. We discuss all these elements throughout the book, along with the importance of preparation and determining the goal of each interview. We also discuss other factors that should be considered, such as the setting, location, and intensity of the interview.
Each interviewer brings unique skills to the task because of his or her training, personality, and experience. Interviewing is indeed an art because each of us brings our unique skill into each interview that we conduct.

Introduction
Chapter 1: Miranda warning and the equivalent across the globe
Abstract
When the Miranda warning issue came out and it was official on midnight, I was in Harvard Square with a Cambridge Police Officer Dominic Scalice, who had just made an arrest. He got on the radio and announced he had just made an arrest of John Smith and was now going to read him his Miranda warning, which he did over the police radio. This is and always been considered very serious when making a lawful arrest.

Introduction
Before we discuss interviewing, we must discuss the Miranda rights or equivalent in other jurisdictions. Police officers in many countries including the United States are required to give a person their Miranda rights prior to any interrogation or questioning of a person. Investigators in the private sector, such as corporation investigators and private investigators, are not required to give the Miranda prior to an
