While the host scrambles to accommodate everyone and her parents fume at the intrusion of the rowdy young people, Georgia forsakes her family’s company in favor of the other group’s... in particular a mysterious individual named Nic. Soon the pair are sneaking away for some alone time… but their chosen spot may not be as private as they had hoped.

Crossing the Aisle - Ada Stone

    Chapter One: Cam

Hey, are you almost done in there? Cam tapped on the bathroom door.

Um… no, not yet, Eva admitted. But you can come in anytime, you know.

Cam huffed and leaned their back against the wall. You know I like my own space in there. What’s taking so long, anyway?

I’m trying to figure out what outfit I want to wear for the ceremony. You should be honored that I’m putting this much thought into it.

Oh, come on! Cam again approached the door and rested their forehead on the green-painted wood. There’s a perfectly good mirror in the bedroom and I need to pee!

The door swung open and Cam fell forward into Eva’s quick-reacting arms. Hello, there, they laughed. You shoulda said you needed to pee earlier; I thought you were just trying to push for your turn in the good mirror.

Shooing Eva out of the way, Cam closed the door behind them and finally found sweet release. Good mirror? What, because you’re seeing yourself in it? they said, yelling to make sure Eva could hear in the hallway.

No, silly, Eva answered. I’m serious, the light is way better in there than the bedroom. And I don’t wanna choose my wedding outfit based on bad lighting.

Okay, whatever you say, Cam called. If Eva replied, they couldn’t hear them over the sound of the water rushing in the toilet and sink.

When Cam was done, the couple traded places again. You know the crew is bound to be here any moment, right? Cam reminded Eva.

Eva’s eyes widened and they looked down at their watch. "Shit, you’re right. Now, if you want me to be late instead of very late, you’ll get out of the way!" With a smile, they shut the door in Cam’s face. A door cannot be slammed lovingly, but Eva had achieved something impressively close.

Returning to the bedroom, Cam stared down at their open suitcase: pajamas, jeans, two T-shirts, two pairs of underwear, their nice sandals, all the toiletry odds and ends. Their single nice dress (an intense pink with white roses and a deep plunging neckline) hung on the closet doorknob. Earlier that morning, while Eva still was still sleeping, they had modeled the dress in front of every mirror in the house. And, they had to admit, they’d definitely looked their best in the bathroom.

Heyooo! Happy wedding weekend! Nic’s voice yelled from the front door as they squeaked it open. Cam hurried down the hall and turned the corner just in time to see their entire crew of best friends step through the door.

Hi, everyone! Cam wrapped them in individual hugs: Nic, Tressie, Finn, and Cole.

The van is all packed and ready to go outside. Cole pointed their thumb over their shoulder.

    Wow—

We knew y’all would probably still be busy in here, so we decided to take care of things ourselves out here, Tressie added. There’s room for your suitcases, of course.

    Thanks—

Plus, Cole and I went to buy snacks on our way. So there’s plenty of graham-cracker bears ready in the back seat!

And more, Nic added. But you’ll have to wait and see.

Thank you! Cam finally sneaked into the conversation. I’ll bring my things out. Eva should be ready… at some point.

Well, if you’re hungry just say the word, Finn offered when Cam returned with their suitcase and dress.

You don’t need to prod me twice. Cam smirked.

Finn nabbed Cam’s suitcase from their hands. Wait here, then. No need to abandon Eva in here; they might think we’ve all kidnapped you! I’ll bring some grahams back in.

Tressie, Nic, and Cole settled in on the couch. Not a minute later Finn returned with an unopened box of snack cookies.

Oh my god, thank you so much. Cam peeled the cardboard top open and reached for the plastic bag inside. As soon as it rustled between their fingers, the bathroom door swung open.

"You are not eating bears without me, are you?" Eva’s eyebrows threatened to float off their forehead with the implication of such a grave crime.

Oh, no! Never! I was just… opening the box for you, Cam began. I—I know you just got your nails done and wouldn’t want you to scrape them up on the cardboard.

While Cam stammered, Eva, now dressed in casual summer clothes, approached the living room. Very well then. I accept your offer of help. They kneeled on the ground in front of Cam and opened their lips. Watching, Cole brought their hand to their mouth, but they couldn’t stop a giggle from escaping. When Cam remained frozen in confusion, Eva continued, What? I don’t want to get crumbs on my nails from reaching in the bag. I’m so fragile, after all. Come on, babe, feed me. They left their mouth open, this time sticking their tongue out.
