About this ebook

The new Must Know series is like a lightning bolt to the brain

Every school subject has must know ideas, or essential concepts, that lie behind it. This book will use that fact to help you learn in a unique way. Most study guides start a chapter with a set of goals, often leaving the starting point unclear. In Must Know High School Trigonometry, however, each chapter will immediately introduce you to the must know idea, or ideas, that lie behind the new trigonometry topic. As you learn these must know ideas, the book will show you how to apply that knowledge to solving trigonometry problems.

Focused on the essential concepts of trigonometry, this accessible guide will help you develop a solid understanding of the subject quickly and painlessly. Clear explanations are accompanied by numerous examples and followed with more challenging aspects of trigonometry. Practical exercises close each chapter and will instill you with confidence in your growing trigonometry skills.

Must Know High School Trigonometry features:

• Each chapter begins with the must know ideas behind the new topic
• Extensive examples illustrate these must know ideas
• Students learn how to apply this new knowledge to problem solving
• 250 practical review questions instill confidence
• IRL (In Real Life) sidebars present real-life examples of the subject at work in culture, science, and history

    Introduction

Welcome to your new trigonometry book! Let us try to explain why we believe you’ve made the right choice. This probably isn’t your first rodeo with either a textbook or other kind of guide to a school subject. You’ve probably had your fill of books asking you to memorize lots of terms (such as in school). This book isn’t going to do that—although you’re welcome to memorize anything you take an interest in. You may also have found that a lot of books jump the gun and make a lot of promises about all the things you’ll be able to accomplish by the time you reach the end of a given chapter. In the process, those books can make you feel as though you missed out on the building blocks that you actually need to master those goals.

With Must Know High School Trigonometry, we’ve taken a different approach. When you start a new chapter, right off the bat you will immediately see one or more must know ideas. These are the essential concepts behind what you are going to study, and they will form the foundation of what you will learn throughout the chapter. With these must know ideas, you will have what you need to hold it together as you study, and they will be your guide as you make your way through each chapter.

To build on this foundation, you will find easy-to-follow discussions of the topic at hand, accompanied by comprehensive examples that show you how to apply what you’re learning to solving typical trigonometry questions. Each chapter ends with review questions—more than 400 throughout the book—designed to instill confidence as you practice your new skills.

sidebar (in real life) will tell you what you’re studying has to do with the real world; other IRLs may just be interesting factoids.

In addition, this book is accompanied by a flashcard app that will give you the ability to test yourself at any time. The app includes more than 135 flashcards with a review question on one side and the answer on the other. You can either work through the flashcards by themselves or use them alongside the book. To find out where to get the app and how to use it, go to the next section, The Flashcard App.

Before you get started, though, let me introduce you to your guides throughout this book. Dr. Sandra L. McCune is a former Regents Professor who taught mathematics at Stephen F. Austin State University. Dr. William D. Clark is a professor of mathematics at the same university. We’ve had the pleasure of working with Drs. McCune and Clark before. They have a clear idea what you should get out of a trigonometry course and have developed strategies to help you get there. Drs. McCune and Clark have also seen the kinds of pitfalls that students can fall into, and they are experienced hands at solving those difficulties. In this book, they apply that experience both to showing you the most effective way to learn a given concept and how to extricate yourself from any trouble you may have gotten into. They will be trustworthy guides as you expand your trigonometry knowledge and develop new skills.

Before we leave you to Drs. McCune and Clark’s sure-footed guidance, let us give you one piece of advice. While we know that saying something "is the worst" is a cliché, if anything is the worst in trigonometry, it could be learning how to verify and use trigonometric identities. Let Drs. McCune and Clark introduce you to the concept and show you how to work confidently with identities. Take our word for it, mastering trigonometry identities will leave you in good stead for the rest of your math career.

    Good luck with your studies!

    The Flashcard App

This book features a bonus flashcard app. It will help you test yourself on what you’ve learned as you make your way through the book (or in and out). It includes 135+ flashcards, both front and back. It gives you two options as to how to use it. You can jump right into the app and start from any point that you want. Or you can take advantage of the handy QR codes at the end of each chapter in the book; they will take you directly to the flashcards related to what you’re studying at the moment.

To take advantage of this bonus feature, follow these easy steps:
