About this ebook

Biogas being a renewable, sustainable and alternative source of energy obtained from the anaerobic digestion of Cow dung or other animal/plant wastes under appropriate conditions can be burnt and used as a cooking fuel after it has been properly purified or scrubbed.

Biogas technology involves the construction of digester/ biogas plant in which the organic materials are charged into, and allowed to digest for production of the gas (a mixture of methane, carbondioxide, hydrogen sulphide, water vapor etc) and a set of purifying chambers for cleaning or scrubbing the gas, before compressing it into the combustion chamber for domestic use. These are what you will learn:

*Introduction to Biogas Technology
*Properties of Biogas
*Operating Parameters Affecting Biogas Production.
*Biochemical Processes of Biogas Production.
*Gas Flow Mechanism
*Design of Digester and Purifying Chambers.
*Gas Production
*Gas Purification
*Testing
*Maintenance of a Biogas Plant
*Safety of Biogas

    INTRODUCTION

Biogas refers to the gas produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic digestion). It is a renewable energy source just like solar and wind energy. It can be produced from local materials like cow dung, poultry dung, pig dung, domestic wastes (sorted), crops, and plant remains.

Some countries that are active in biogas production are: United States, China, India, Germany, Senegal, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Benin, Cameroon, and Kenya.

The production of biogas through anaerobic digestion of animal and plant wastes or materials yields economic and environmental benefits such as production of methane for fuel, slurry with high nutrient content which is use as fertilizer. Hence, anaerobic digestion provides renewable energy resources for many applications, in addition to waste reduction.

Production of biogas helps to provide employment for farmers who would supply organic wastes from their livestock or plant wastes and also for those who would transport the materials. There would also b available employment for persons who would design and manufacture the biogas digester and those that would carry out maintenance on the plant. This means that the development of an active biogas sector by any country could lead to the establishment of new enterprises.

Biogas production also helps to reduce over dependence on wood as a source of cooking fuel and hence helps to reduce deforestation, soil erosion, and flooding.

Biogas is a viable and sustainable alternative source of energy. It provides energy for cooking and heating in rural households and processing in a variety of traditional cottage industries in urban and semi- urban
