Dedication
Cancer is just a word, not a sentence and we, cancer patients, are not mere statistics. Cancer does not fall overnight: it’s a long physiological and biochemical process which starts during our life span. Most of the time, our immune system controls and aborts it. Everyone has cells that have mutant proteins from DNA damage. A cell's natural cycle has checkpoints when it determines whether it is in a healthy state and should divide, or is damaged and should repair or kill itself. Cancer can occur when the normal checkpoints in the cell cycle are misregulated somehow and the tainted cell starts dividing. And when our body is overloaded, the cancer tumors grow and invade, threatening to cut short our life.
This book is dedicated to all fellow cancer patients, to their supportive and caregiving family and friends, to the true healers and true doctors who are giving hope, to all those compassionate nurses who sacrificially go beyond their official duties to bring humanity and smile into the cancer treatment centers.
Acknowledgments
This book would have never existed without a stream of events out of control, a set of people friends and foes, a set of knowledge gracefully made available thanks to social media resources.
I want to thank my family who stands with me in the middle of the Tornado.
To my Sons Finda Michael, Finda Moses and Finda Micah: with their last name they share a same initial FMY. You are my strength, it was because of you that I had the courage to stand up again, when the diseases were flowing all over me.
To my only daughter Florianne Christelle, my princess as I always call you: you are strong and intelligent, you are the bond of our family. I promised to be there for your first born, so the Lord heard my prayers.
To my father, Bernard Dounia Yadaba: you raised me in Central African Republic with moral values and helped build my character to #StayStrong and #TrustInTheLord. You taught me humility and hard work, honesty and faithfulness, and you named me after what you wanted me to understand: Honor!
To my sisters and brothers in the flesh or in the Christ: you are so many to relentlessly pray for me, to surround me with the shield of faith. Without you I could have never made it so far. You are the unsung heroes. My special acknowledgment to Jean-Claude Yadaba, my eldest Brother who was going through a personal trial at the same time but was always on the wall of prayers for me. May God continue to bless you abundantly!
To my friends: your indisputable support never failed me. You cried with me when I was hurt, you laughed with me when I was happy, you starved with me in time of want and you rejoiced with me in times of plenty.
To all Researchers and Scientists who built the massive database of knowledge on Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Nutrition, Botanic, Medicine, Psychology, and so on. Cancer is no longer the dreadful cluster of diseases, thanks to your invaluable contribution.
There are so many people I would like to thank personally like my colleagues at Oracle Corporation, bloggers and individual contributors to the topic of cancer treatment, all cancer support network: your experiences with cancer and your courage to share with others are saving thousands of lives every year. I wish hundreds of thousands of people diagnosed with cancer every year in the USA alone may benefit like me from your survivorship.
I can’t thank enough all opposition I faced, for example a two years battle before the Family court in Manassas, Virginia pushing me to become the first American citizen homeless who survives without money the Emperor of All Maladies. Yes, overzealous individuals made it impossible for me to have surgery (you need your home to recover) and chemotherapy (definitely you need the safety of your home to follow the restrictions related to bacterial and viral infections after a chemo). It was hell, disguised under a frivolous action and their only motivation was to kill. Yes, your worst enemy can be used by Almighty God for miracles to happen.
Prologue
This book does not provide any medical advice or treatment. It is based upon a real experience with The Emperor of All Maladies¹, cancer. I am not a superman. I don’t have any special skills above the normal crafts learned from childhood or within the education and school system, or even developed during my short lifespan on earth.
I started writing one year exactly following my official cancer diagnosis at the terminal stage, and four years since the first severe symptoms of the diseases sent me under the surgeon knives. For the last four years my allopathic physicians worked on individual symptoms of my conditions. Acid reducers to begin with, targeting my stomach. Then they removed my appendix because of my intestinal cramps and abdominal bloating. They fed me with proton pump inhibitors and antibiotics to tackle my bloating, constipation, repeated intestinal cramps and pain, blood in the stool.
At a very critical time of my journey, in 2014, a creative family lawyer saw a huge opportunity to strike, and he did. With a simple lie, he portrayed a sick and needy father as "violent criminal" and ask a judge to remove him from his own house while taking away almost all of his incomes. I lived on the streets, with severe and life threatening medical conditions and limited resources. My conditions did not improve at all, on the contrary it got worse.
Then, the fatal diagnosis was handed down to me one year later, in 2015: it’s over. "You have a metastatic colon cancer and your liver is also compromised", I was told.
Of course, I freaked out big time. I lamented greatly on myself, crying out to God, for I am also a believer. I read as much Bible as I could, listened to almost any YouTube channel available on the subject of cancer, searched any medical and scientific databases available on the public or government health system network, tried to seek help and support from the traditional medical organization. I was offered the standard of care, with no hope of getting well anytime soon. My social network started to grow slim, the fear of cancer is a powerful pretext used by acquaintances to end relationships.
If I can survive through the worst Tornado of life, a manhunt that wrecked my family and a stage VI colon cancer
