Preface
The first thing I need to say is if you are ever reincarnated, you want to come back as one of Patti’s Golden Retrievers. You will have the best life ever. The best of all worlds; a loving human, compassionate training, places to go, best of medical care, great place to live and best of everything anywhere in the world. Your life will be what any animal or even human could ever dream of.
Acknowledgements

Dedication
I DEDICATE THIS BOOK TO HIM AS I AM PRETTY SURE THIS THE WAY HE THOUGHT OF THINGS AS THEY HAPPENED. HE IS THE LOVE OF MY LIFE.
If They Could Only Talk
How many times have so many dog owners made this statement! We take these four legged animals into our homes and deep into our hearts providing the best care possible at great effort and expense. To most they become their substitute children and are treated just as equal or better in some cases.
As they look into your eyes with that quizzical stare you cannot help but wonder what is going on in their mind. How much do they really understand or does it really matter? You see that comforting look in their eyes when they are being brushed or petted and sense they have a feeling of being loved and protected.
The most difficult of all is when they are sick or hurting! If you could only ask them what the problem is or where it hurts. They just trust you and rely on you to take good care of them to make them feel better. It is so painful to be helpless or unable to make them well, especially if you do not know what is wrong. If this cannot be done then we must rely on the veterinarian and then the hunt for a solution begins.
I know we have all been in a situation where our pet comes to us with a nudge, push or rub and we appreciate it but do not get the hint! They are so patient trying to get our attention and tell us something is wrong. We either did not have our antenna up or are so involved in what we are doing, that they get ignored. Then it happens! Our pet will get sick have an accident or just do something out of its control. After we finally respond, clean up, take care of them or the mess, it hits us. DUH! If only they could talk and tell us so we could pay more attention. Only then we would be able to absolve ourselves of the guilt and sad feelings of not being there for them sooner.
When they are lying there with that sad look, hurting and in their own way really telling us what their problem is, they cannot understand why we are not reacting. We all talk to them knowing they cannot answer, usually asking what’s wrong or where does it hurt
. They just stare at us with those pitiful eyes that break your heart.
This is the journey of my beloved Jake
from inception to the end, in what I imagine took place in his mind regarding his experiences.
FIRST LIGHT
My mother Amy and sire Merlin are Golden Retrievers. They were both well trained and well groomed show dogs. My sire held many Champion AKC titles: International, Canadian, United States and South American. My mother came from a long line of Champions as well and held many AKC titles as well.
The earliest memory I have is when my mother was getting ready to deliver her puppies. I was in this sack inside a tube on one side of my mother’s stomach. Apparently she has two of these tubes called horns
on each side of her stomach and the puppies were all stacked in them on either side It is very difficult to tell how many there are until they are all delivered.
Well, apparently I was going to be the first one out and as she started in labor I was just too big to come out. My new owners took her to their Veterinarian, Dr. Ken Simmons and it was decided I was rather large and he would have Dr. Friend perform a C-section. All the arrangements were made and most of the staff was available around the noon hour to assist in the delivery.
The procedure started and when they opened up
