21st Century Skills - Raja Maznah

Introduction
Technology can help teachers to simplify the process of helping students to learn and enhance their students learning experiences. Technology may offer alternative ways for teachers to engage students and to develop the much sought after 21st century skills, helping their students to communicate, collaborate, be creative and think critically. To support student learning using technology may sound simple, yet the preparation and delivery may be a challenge to a busy teacher. Assuming that a teacher is willing to spend his/her time to seek for new ways to engage students with technology especially in a language classroom we are offering this book as a resource to pave the way for exploring alternative ways of teaching in technology enhanced learning environments.
The purpose of this book is to help teachers to reflect on alternative ways to teach students with technology to enhance and support their learning of the 21st century skills.
The chapters are written by teachers who are passionate about Teaching English as a second Language (TESL) to their Omani students at the primary schools, secondary schools and higher education institutions.
The project was conceived to fulfil a graduate level course requirement to put together a resource that would be a reference for other teachers who are looking for ways to change and transform their student learning using especially applications and tools that are freely available on the internet. In writing the chapters, the authors have made references to relevant research related to the topics of developing 21st century skills of communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. They have sifted through many ideas and tools to enable them to write the chapters that suggest possible teaching and learning strategies to be supported with appropriate tools and technology to enable the pursuit of the 21st century learning outcomes.
The chapters are arranged based on specific skills and levels of education.
We have tried to keep the writing as interesting as possible targeting teachers from different levels of scholarly and technology engagement, offering guidance and tips to enable teachers to pick and choose the chapter of interest and tools to try in their own classroom. Although the book is written with language teachers in mind, we hope that other subject teachers would be able to pick up the ideas and suggestions and transfer to their own subject area.
To enrich the content of the book, you may find various embedded links to YouTube videos and websites within the articles. These links provide in depth reviews and examples of the reviewed apps. There are also available links for the teacher to download the reviewed apps.
We have taken the first step to encourage sharing of ideas on technology integration, we hope that you will share your lessons learned with us and this would allow for more books and resources like this to be written and shared.
Get Rid of the Box with Technology
Maryem Al Jabri
Creativity is deemed one of the main skills a productive person must obtain in the 21st century since it is vastly desired in all occupational sectors. Learners must learn how to think and act creatively. Teachers also are believed to be models for their students, and their implementation of creative activities in their classroom is very significant to enhance learners' creativity. The aim of this chapter is to guide teachers to be more creative in their classrooms with assistance of technology. A list of sites and apps will be reviewed briefly so that teachers can get the gist of what technology can offer to them.
The Concept of Creativity
In education, creativity is commonly linked to artistic courses or perceived as a special ability that is only possessed by some gifted people (Cachia, Ferrari, Ala-Mutka & Punie, 2010). Because of this misconception of creativity, many people tend to see themselves as uncreative (Sahlberg, 2009). Recently, creativity is redefined and more research is endeavoured to explain what creativity is and whether it can be promoted and assessed. One of these definitions is suggested by Cachia, Ferrari, Ala-Mutka, & Punie (2010) which refers to creativity as a product or process that shows a balance of originality and value. It is a skill, an ability to make unforeseen connections and to generate new and appropriate ideas
(p.19). Through this explanation, we can infer that creativity is a skill that can be taught and can be assessed as well as there are certain criteria available.
Why Do We Need Creativity?
Most research on teachers’ conceptions and attitudes toward creativity indicates that teachers perceive it positively and believe that it is an essential skill that has to be nurtured among students.
