Cookies in America, biscuits in Britain, right? Not so fast. ‘Biscuit’ comes from the Latin bis meaning twice, and coctus meaning cooked. By contrast, ‘cookies’ are rooted in the early Dutch word koekje, meaning ‘little cake’.
