La ora 3.10 pe data de 7 iunie 1917, întunericul de dinaintea zorilor de pe frontul de vest a fost cutremurat de „pilonii de foc“ – detonarea rapidă a 19 mine uriașe, ascunse adânc în tuneluri sub liniile germane și conținând 450 de tone de material exploziv. Suflul lor devastator a spulberat liniile de front germane, provocând mii de victime. Apoi, lansând un atac bine planificat la locul carnagiului, susținut de tancuri și de un baraj neîntrerupt de artilerie, britanicii au capturat în câteva ore obiectivul strategic al crestei Messines. Acest exemplu rar de inovație și succes operațional în Primul Război Mondial a pus bazele strategice ale ofensivei Aliaților care a urmat, rușinoasa a treia bătălie de la Ypres sau Passchendaele.
