Reflection Worksheet for 2012 Horizon Report for K12 Reflection is a critical part of the learning process.

After reading the 2012 Horizon Report for K12, reflect on the following points: Question Reflection What key points are you taking away from the 2012 Horizon Report for K12? The first key point, for me, materialized when the authors spoke of natural user interfaces changing the ways we interact with computers and concurred that, As such, it is at once transformative and disruptive, (p. 32). With one quote the main key point from the 2012 Horizon Report for K12 clarified, for me, the underlying theme that, yes, though the six researched technologies may initially disrupt the educational environment, their potential to transform learning far outweighs the discombobulation The second key point highlights the aspect of peoples expectations of working, learning, playing, and studying whenever and wherever they choose. Todays students grew up surrounded by technology, yet many educators remain tied to their tried and true teaching methods. Particularly after reading the 2012 Horizon Report for K12, the technologies on the time-to-adopt horizon include tools and devices that motivate and encourage learning in any environment. Finally, the third key point involves utilizing the six technologies to empower students in their learning. With mobile devices and gamebased learning, students transform their learning environments as active content producers and creators. Particularly with game-based learning, users operate in an environment rich with collaborative, problemsolving, communication, and critical thinking opportunities (p. 20). The possibilities highlighted in the 2012 Horizon Report for K12 point to an abundant horizon awaiting the educational communitys awakening. throughout the school. Though my school currently utilizes 30 iPads, the number remains insufficient in meeting the needs of students and teachers. Additionally, utilizing the latest educational apps would fulfill the potential of the iPads. The Personal Learning Environment (PLE) represents an excellent vehicle in promoting student learning, motivation and differentiation. From my own experience, Netvibe and Pageflakes offered easy-to-use formats for creating a PLE. The challenge includes motivating teachers to utilize a PLE, assess and select the appropriate tools, then promote the PLE within their classrooms. Finally, integrating mobile devices and apps represent a realistic application from the 2012 Horizon Report for K12. Due to the likelihood of students and teachers understanding the workings of mobile devices and apps, including a BYOD policy allows access to vast educational opportunities.

To advance these ideas, who are the key stakeholders who need to be involved in discussions and planning? How would you make the case to them?

The Superintendent, Technology Director, Media Specialists and Principals must lay the foundational discussions and planning for the ideas. With a sketched-out framework, the teachers and parents would then join the conversation. If the administration supports the new technologies, the summit remains close. To advance the ideas into tangible entities and begin the climb, the stakeholders must first visualize the summit in all its possibilities, both positive and negative. After understanding the potential results, the stakeholders must understand the requisite steps, including costs, access, and future opportunities. Purchasing additional iPads and apps with grants as with the initial 30 iPads, offsets the financial concerns, as should highlighting the number of students and teachers that currently utilize a smartphone. With survey results in hand to enforce the lowcost of a BYOD policy, mobile device and

apps assume a realistic goal. Finally, PLEs require strong advocates to promote the potential. With an example to showcase how a PLE may look, the advocate must also demonstrate enthusiasm and a solid knowledge base of assessing and selecting tools and resources when building the PLE. I believe the three ideas represent realistic and invigorating 21st Century learning to integrate within my school environment.
